Some of the Stanley Steamer ad copy claimed longer tire life, as without having to change gears, the tires of a steam car weren't subjected to the repeated loading and unloading of torque while accelerating.

I think I may as well, given I've already done two versions of DeWitt Clinton.

Figuring out the firebox without a plan view it going to be troublesome, as it appears to be flat on top. Complex geometry to join that to the boiler barrel (maybe why it wasn't built that way!)

So we may conclude that the drawing of "DeWitt Clinton" is the original plan, shown to John B. Jervis before the locomotive was built. The "DeWitt Clinton No. 2" drawing is the locomotive as it was actually built.

Two big clues: The Henry Ford museum has copies of a drawing that show the locomotive as it was actually built, these have a note on them: "DeWitt Clinton No. 2". 2nd, In a letter from Adam Hall to John B. Jervis about the loco, Hall states "The boiler will be different from the plan shown you..."

This drawing, labeled "DeWitt Clinton" has been something of a mystery. It has been published many times, but it varies in many respects from what we know of the actual loco, and my research indicates it almost certainly a concept for the locomotive that went unused.

A photo I took of a U.S. market Wartburg many years ago. The cars were not popular because the small 2-stroke engine, and because of anti-communist sentiment in the U.S. The importer also sold Skoda cars, with a little bit more success.

I understand the Wartburg was reasonably popular in England.

Honestly, if you don't want people to reply to your post, you shouldn't be on this site in the first place. You should leave.

Let's put it like this: seeing a post on your feed, from somebody you don't like, about something you don't like, is a lot like a stranger breaking down your front door and dumping a wheelbarrow of shit in your living room. Them blocking your reply is like them shooting you for telling them to GTFO.

And it's going to be a lot more frustrating if people have to see posts they don't want to see, from people they don't want to see, and then on top of that, not even be allowed to reply. That is going to PISS PEOPLE OFF. Absolutely the worst approach.

If they show up because my friends reposted them, sure. I'm fine with building organic relationships. If the company is showing them to me, because the company wants me to see them, no. That's the source of almost all online strife.

Easier fix is just don't show people posts from people they don't follow. Easy. Problem solved. Showing people posts from people they don't follow + can't reply to is going blow things up and escalate tensions.

Block and move on folks, obvious troll is obvious.

It's amazing how everybody loved the site in 2023, then they handed trust and safety over to a weirdo in 2024, the site goes to hell, and the staff acts like it's a mystery what happened.

No posts from bluechecks (they are without exception insufferable). No posts from people you don't follow. No trending tab. In other words, just bluesky before it all went downhill in 2024. There are reasons why everybody was happier with the site then.

Personally not a fan, but he and his work occupy a particularly interesting/important moment in comics history, and that has pretty much ensured lasting interest. It also helps that unlike many of his contemporaries, he has a good handle on the craft aspect of the art.

Honestly the lack of small steamers is mind boggling, given people are far more likely to model a layout that requires switching, than they are an expanse of mainline.

We really need a Ralph Nader type figure for the 21st century, somebody who makes "here's how companies are screwing you" into a cohesive, accessible subject for consumers.

Tech companies being generally anti-consumer has got people used to being powerless/unheard.
