08.02.2026 07:56 — 👍 8 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0I feel great about replicas when they’re good and the real thing is never ever gonna happen…
That said, $223k sure is some real money too 🙃
I regret to inform you that they know exactly what they’re doing and there are variant labels (I bought the only can with Suki’s S2K, I don’t need an Eclipse. Unless there’s more than three…)
08.02.2026 03:59 — 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0But actually I wanted to do some merch using various TURBO logos used across different manufacturers and I ran into a snag on BMW’s due to no two cars matching 🙃
08.02.2026 03:01 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Why yes it’s me the person who had a whole (twitter, sorry) thread about bad Sega Astro City reproduction art thank you for asking
08.02.2026 03:00 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0Friend has pointed out the possibility that there are multiple real versions but given how off some of them are I’m still betting bad repro
08.02.2026 01:41 — 👍 7 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I’ve seen many variations but in the end I think I decided that the car in BMW’s own historical collection is close to a source of truth

My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

06.02.2026 23:32 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Battlegarage guys pointed out how the hood weighs noticeably more than OEM one, reminds me of when my friend got an insurance replacement hood on his Miata 25 years ago and it was steel 😭

06.02.2026 21:58 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Anyway given that the average or all AE86s aren’t totally straight it does bring up the questions of whether this is any worse and the answer is: I don’t know. But probably yes.
06.02.2026 21:57 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0“Some idiot drilled this out and threaded it for fine pitch hardware” (yes and yes, get ready to use a 13mm wrench on an AE86!)
06.02.2026 21:56 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Also, they should’ve definitely weighed this thing before putting anything on it
06.02.2026 21:55 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0You can still get a shell for less than what they want for this so it’s a very valid question. I feel like it’s gotta be better to justify the price.
06.02.2026 21:54 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0OTOH Caterham has been making the same thing since 1973 and still can’t get all the holes to line up or ship the right hardware all the time, so…

06.02.2026 21:41 — 👍 7 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Since every SEMA build is a rush job I am curious if chassis #2 is any better. Bigtime bought it from Battle Garage who gave some first impressions a few weeks ago. The factory should probably be paying attention to these videos as they point out so many little things they got wrong.
06.02.2026 21:40 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 3 📌 0Don’t worry, when I sent this video to my friend he immediately sent back the battle garage video, which is good and I plan on linking to (and shows my car in it, lol) but this is way more in-depth.
06.02.2026 21:36 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0And then built it up—unfortunately this means I can’t compare this one to the video where BG guys pointed out all the wrong stuff because it’s the same chassis.
06.02.2026 21:35 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0They bought it from battle garage!
06.02.2026 21:35 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Nothing lines up, wrong hardware and threads, doesn’t appear that the manufacturer measured or aligned the chassis they scanned (or if they did, they sure did build it wrong!), but with a hammer and drill everything came together kit car style and it can be driven. A win, but at what cost? ($10-13k)
06.02.2026 21:35 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 3 📌 0So as was prophesied (wait that’s how you say it? wow I’ve been making up a word all these years), the YouTubers have gotten ahold of the alibaba AE86. Is it good? Depends on the curve we’re grading on…
06.02.2026 21:32 — 👍 20 🔁 6 💬 5 📌 1Certainly cheating as one of them is only Ford-powered… but if we allow that, I’ve got it!
