You don’t seem to understand that wiping out 75% to 95% of all species on the planet is not really a reasons thing for us to be blasé about. We are currently causing an equivalent extinction event to that of the extinction of the non avian dinosaurs and everything else that went with them.

All I see are people unwilling to engage with the long term details of climate change. We have already locked in major impacts for thousands of years at the very least that we have barely seen the onset of. That is absolutely certain. CO2 will be above 280ppm for thousands of years. Inevitable now.

4.7 billion years? So what? It’s about how it affects the planet and us right now. The past is only relevant in terms of what it can tell us about what to expect. It’s the future we will have to live in. Or die in. And a detailed look at past climate change tells us that future is NOT GOOD.

The climate NEVER changes as rapidly as it is now. The closest to this is during the 3rd, 4th and 5th major mass extinctions. 1.5 million years at the normal, average background rate locked in by just the last fifty years. This will be the sixth major mass extinction in that 4.7 billion years.

The detailed reality of what we can expect as long term outcomes of the climate change we have already locked in are far scarier than that image. The extinction of 75% to 95% of all species. The collapse of our current civilisation with billions of human deaths. A gaping scar in the fossil record.
