Since 2002 I've copyedited 282 scholarly books. Since 2018 I've taught history to many hundreds of college students. I'm proud of these contributions to society, and grateful to the public schools who taught me, and public colleges and unis who employ me.

It's worth noticing the quiet works of grace that those around us do every day.

Interesting that most said reform from within is more effective. I thought more of them would hold up the Tea Party and Revolutionary War as ideals. #historians 3/3

I also gave them articles discussing examples from today, including Uber drivers fighting for changes and/or unionizing, people ditching their smartphones for basic flip phones, and mutual aid in times of crisis. #historians 2/

I asked students in my US History I class to consider whether reform from within a system or creating something new is more effective. There are many examples of both, including the Revolutionary War, early labor movements like the Mill Girls, abolitionists, utopian communities, etc. #historians 1/

When you are feeling weary or despairing, remember that there are people in every corner of the world taking life affirming action in the direction of more justice. The fact that you can't see it all is a comfort because it means there is an excess of positive actions happening all at once. #onwards

To be fair, several students gave excellent descriptions of how to evaluate sources, including cross-checking with other sources, being skeptical of .com sites and ones with ads, and being very skeptical of social media posts and anything too wild. (Except Florida man stuff is usually true!)

Assigned an essay on Revolutionary Era media bias & a prompt to write on how to evaluate news sources today. 2 said they don't look at any news (UGH), 1 said they don't question news because that's how they were brought up (UGH), & 2 wrote about "Florida man" articles (LOL). #historians #AmTeaching
