TRUMP [after spending 5 minutes with Zohran]: surplus value, it’s a very wonderful thing, very wonderful, and they’re stealing it. Can you believe that?

We’re going to be looking very strongly at the bourgeoisie, what they’re up to

Just a reminder that it's nice the Mamdani thing went better than everyone expected, but Trump should still be immediately impeached & removed for unprecedented things that were once beyond the pale of American politics.

Nice find. Here’s another excerpt:
“And I urge you…to remember…the land of your birth. Bring to us its culture and its heritage. We don't reject them. We need them. They enrich us.”
Reagan was overall a terrible president. But in this matter he was correct.

Remarks at Naturalization Ceremonies for New United States Citizens in Detroit, Michigan 100184a

I cam across this passage in @pastpunditry.bsky.social's excellent book, PARTISANS, and was thinking about the contrast with JD Vance's blood and soil nationalism.

You know, man can take unto himself a wife. A wife can take unto herself a husband. That doesn't mean that they abandon their mothers and fathers and forget them. So, you know, every now and then academics talk about assimilation and how our various ethnic groups have, with time, dropped their ethnicity and become more ``American.'' Well, I don't know about that. It seems to me that America is constantly reinventing what ``America'' means. We adopt this country's phrases and that country's art, and I think it's really closer to the truth to say that America has assimilated as much as her immigrants have. It's made for a delightful diversity, and it's made us a stronger and a more vital nation.

"power disadvantage" when one of them is POTUS & one of them is a mayor-elect. No shit there's a power disadvantage.

It looks like Trump might’ve voted in favor of that amendment, lol.

Reporter: Are affirming that you think Trump is a fascist?

Mamdani: We’ve spoken about—

Trump: That’s ok, you can just say it.

House votes to denounce ‘horrors’ of socialism ahead of Mamdani-Trump meeting The incoming New York mayor will meet with the president at the White House this afternoon.

I took down my original post on this resolution because there was an amendment (that got voted down) to condemn fascism. I still think there was no reason for any Dem to vote in favor of this.

Fair point. I did mention this downthread, but should have included it in the original post.

I should have added this point, since they did put forward an amendment along these lines. But agree with Timothy that Dems should have not voted in favor of this.

I’m not sure if anyone would be interested but I’ve thought that more “day in the life” posts and essays by people who actually work in higher ed would be enlightening and helpful in challenging such narratives.

also, everything thats actually bad about really-existing socialism--eg personality cults, secret police, mass imprisonment, state propaganda, heavy-handed central planning, zealous and venal apparatchiks, rampant corruption and dysfunction, etc--are all endemic features of maga and the trump regime

There was an amendment that failed, etc. but honestly, if they couldn't stop a dumb resolution like this, they should at least have the party discipline to be registered as Present and not cast a vote. But the Democratic leadership has never seen a rake it didn't want to step on.

Even my much older in-laws understand that the stigma around words like socialism are dumb and doing this is embarrassing.

Fond memories of that time Mike Johnson was president of a local law school that never opened its doors, in part because it was attached to a Baptist college that was losing its accreditation, and in part because it was always a scam from the start

I've Hesitated to Call Donald Trump a Fascist. Until Now After last week the label seems not just acceptable, but necessary.

They could have cited the eminent historian of fascism, Robert O. Paxton.

Enten: "This is probably the worst 10 day period for the president in the polls his entire second term. The numbers are just atrocious ... when your best poll has you 14 points underwater, you know it's truly bad and it's as bad as 26 points underwater ... -43 with independents! They despise him."

The disjunction between what typically happens at institutions of higher ed in the U.S. and so many of the dominant narratives—which depict them as “woke” sites of propaganda transmission, suffering from a lack of variety in methods and approaches, and cauldrons of hatred—is enormous.

The mayor of NYC could also unleash daily sanitation, building & restaurant inspections on all Trump properties & see to it that the streets in front of them are dug up for noisy underground repairs taking months or years to complete so he's got at least an arrow or two of retaliation in his quiver

Mamdani’s meeting with Trump comes with a power disadvantage The president has threatened to yank federal aid and send the National Guard to patrol the Big Apple.

This piece normalizes the “temperamental president” and his threats to engage in extralegal punishment against New York City.

Mike Pence wrote an opinion piece for Fox News. Reading the headline, I was like, "Okay, seems like a normal take."

Then I read the subheadline and... bro, what?

It gets lost in the shuffle, but the Speaker of the House is someone who, by all rights, should’ve had his career ended a decade ago by a Shreveport TV news investigative team.
