Just a reminder that it's nice the Mamdani thing went better than everyone expected, but Trump should still be immediately impeached & removed for unprecedented things that were once beyond the pale of American politics.

“And I urge you…to remember…the land of your birth. Bring to us its culture and its heritage. We don't reject them. We need them. They enrich us.”
Reagan was overall a terrible president. But in this matter he was correct.
I cam across this passage in @pastpunditry.bsky.social's excellent book, PARTISANS, and was thinking about the contrast with JD Vance's blood and soil nationalism.

You know, man can take unto himself a wife. A wife can take unto herself a husband. That doesn't mean that they abandon their mothers and fathers and forget them. So, you know, every now and then academics talk about assimilation and how our various ethnic groups have, with time, dropped their ethnicity and become more ``American.'' Well, I don't know about that. It seems to me that America is constantly reinventing what ``America'' means. We adopt this country's phrases and that country's art, and I think it's really closer to the truth to say that America has assimilated as much as her immigrants have. It's made for a delightful diversity, and it's made us a stronger and a more vital nation.

This is better than any comedy show

Fair point. I did mention this downthread, but should have included it in the original post.

I’m not sure if anyone would be interested but I’ve thought that more “day in the life” posts and essays by people who actually work in higher ed would be enlightening and helpful in challenging such narratives.

But the Democratic leadership has never seen a rake it didn't want to step on.

Mike Pence wrote an opinion piece for Fox News. Reading the headline, I was like, "Okay, seems like a normal take."
Then I read the subheadline and... bro, what?
It gets lost in the shuffle, but the Speaker of the House is someone who, by all rights, should’ve had his career ended a decade ago by a Shreveport TV news investigative team.
