How many words have this property? It’s up for debate. Finding them depends on what you want to count as words. I disagree with “et,” “lin,” and “de” found in these images, but the rest are pretty good examples. I estimate that a fluent English speaker would recognize around 2,000 nested compounds.

I wrote a program that identifies what I call “nested compound words”: words that can have real English words removed from their interior and still concatenate to real words.

My favorite is BARTENDER, which produces
