The NIH announced it will slash billions of dollars of support to universities and research centers.

This is one of the biggest attacks on science we have ever seen. It could dismantle the biomedical research system, shut down clinical trials, and halt development of treatments.

To do that, we must emphasize the immediate, life saving impact of USAID’s programs and all the good it does.

We can recognize the harms caused, while also working towards improved models of develop’t and global health that are rooted in anti-capitalist principles. But that’s tomorrow’s fight. Right now, we must fight as hard as we can for this important work to continue.

There are some on the left celebrating USAID’s demise. I find this shortsighted and callous. Dismantling USAID rapidly, w/o viable alternatives in place, will have devastating impacts. Millions rely on USAID-funded programs. Cutting off this support will lead to preventable deaths and suffering.

On one hand, we know that USAID is a tool of soft power that reinforces the structures of capitalist exploitation and imperialism. On the other hand, it’s currently one of the few mechanisms we have to deliver life saving resources and expertise to the communities who need them

I think many of us in this field recognize that USAID is an incredibly contradictory institution. And I feel like I’m constantly grappling with
how to reconcile these contradictions.

Are any other global health professionals also feeling gross about the continued emphasis by media + politicians on USAID’s role in maintaining soft power abroad? I understand why some feel this is the most effective way to gain bipartisan support but I really hate that it’s become a central focus.

The DHS program provides critical, high-quality data used to inform life-saving policies and programs globally. Without it, governments and organizations would be left without the evidence needed to combat child mortality, infectious diseases, and other emerging health threats.

No, it’s imperative that we pay close attention to what’s happening to USAID. DOGE plans to apply the exact same strategies to dismantle other federal agencies. Dept of Ed, NOAA are next. We must do all we can to stop this power grab and make it clear that this executive overreach will not stand.
