Researchers led by Dr. Lemmond sequenced their DNA, and found something very interesting; what we thought was a European species wasn’t European at all!! It was a completely new species, uniquely adapted to PNW forests.

How do you discover a new species? Sometimes it starts in an herbarium cabinet. In this case, the OSC truffle collection (the largest in the world!!) helped rewrite the story of one of the PNWs most prized fungi, the Oregon Black Truffle.

The OSU herbarium houses approximately 700,000 vascular plant, bryophyte, algal, fungal, and lichen specimens. The collections are worldwide in scope, with a focus on Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
