I'd go as far as to say the past few years have proven that if you want to make a multiplayer game high realism is a mistake no matter how much money the suits push on you to take this 'sure fire solution to success'. Not every game can be hyper realistic and it sell a lot. There is no easy answers.

So they often end up either 'solo/single player' OR 'have a 'diverse' cast'. Obviously people reacting to diversity negatively is a separate issue, but is one way they try to fill the void of an explanation that is left by ruling out 'realistic high fidelity graphics are hurting the art direction'.

High fidelity realism damages art direction when it's made 'for the masses' and not targeting a specific niche. But the masses cling to high fidelity realism as a core pillar of 'what looks good'. It's cognitive dissonance. When you go realism there is only so many ways to differentiate characters.

After I saw the reaction to the Ark Raider knock off in the youtube chat for State of Play something finally clicked for me. The problem isn't woke or even that people are tired of hero shooters. It's closer to something you are alluding to here. It's the impact of high fidelity

As a content creator you are almost obligated to increase the shock/intensity of whatever trend you can manage to connect to your niche. On twitter this same force existed but it was lesser and early tiktok during the 'Gen Z' era was still adjusting to the tiktok algo from other social media norms.
