Dr. Markland was a shining example of the great good a single wise, compassionate, & passionate person can do. My deepest condolences to his colleagues, friends & family. Your loss is profound. Our loss is lesser, but we grieve with you. We should all try to be a bit more like Darren Markland.

Suddenly, Edmonton feels very small, as many of us are united in grief over the loss of Dr. Darren Markland. He was an advocate for healthcare & health. A humanitarian loved our city. He shared his views from the river & the river valley & from the heart. He united many of us in admiration of him.

A friend is a great reason to visit Banff! I've always found it too busy, though of course the amazing scenery is the reason for that. You should check the seasonal road closures in Waterton before you go - I think the high altitude roads with the best vistas are closed many months of the year.

Jasper Park is gorgeous still & Jasper the town needs you. Explore the park, spend 1 night in Jasper, then drive the Icefields Parkway to Canmore. See the glaciers! Canmore scenery is absolutely spectacular & the town is charming. Pop into Banff if you must, but spend your 2nd night in Canmore.

Today is the 35th anniversary of the murder of 14 female students at Polytechnique Montreal.

Every December 6th in Canada we remember them and reflect on violence against women.

Agreed. I believe it is called "institutional violence". Victims are visible on the streets of downtown Edmonton every day.

The Canadian identity, as I understand and celebrate it, is that anyone can be Canadian, while maintaining their individual/community identity, as long as we all respect each other and nurture a feeling of belonging.

I've found & booked a snow removal service for our home. I'm calling it my Christmas gift to my husband & his to me. We'll still do backyard deck & boardwalk & the paths for the dogs to do their business, but a huge relief to not have to worry about the city sidewalk, front path or the driveway.
