Who's Gavin Newsome? We're discussing Jim Gavin." NYCNAFOFELLA: "Looks like this fight against international Putin loving fascists is going international. And who the fuck is Jim Gavin?" banjogall: "Jim Gavin was a nominee in the Irish presidential race, until he pulled out at the weekend due to a scandal whereby he owed a former tenant €3,300. Not sure what Putin and fascists have to do with this." NYCNAFOFELLA: "Announcing this on a board where Americans are in the fight of their lives against a fascist takeover may be a pointer..." banjogall: "Other nations must not discuss their own politics online. Got it." The exchange starts before this excerpt, like one expects: the Irish posters are talking about their national politics and the American poster butts in to condemn Gavin Newsome, presumably because they thought talking about a "Gavin" meant the only Gavin they knew of - Gavin Newsome. It subsequently dissolves into base insults from NYCNAFOFELLA after that, and mockery from the Irish and international community who take umbrage at both the American insistence that everything happening online must be about the USA and that Irish people are anglos (which is a massive insult to Irish people).

I try my best not to do this, but uh... Americans, you gotta rein yourselves and your friends in. This is BAD.

The internet does not belong to JUST you or the USA (thankfully). And just because you recognize a name, it doesn't mean people are talking about you.

Mastodon is mainly for techies, but is also a deeply unpleasant place full of people who act dreadfully, either because they believe they're morally superior, or use this as a cover. The people who run it are simultaneously unpleasant and gormless. And it's like a ghost town at the best of times.
