I feel like this song should be a cover staple in Wisconsin. It’s such an anthem for being talented and overlooked.

Flyover Land
YouTube video by Marques Bovre and the Evil Twins - Topic Flyover Land

Hey @sarahkendzior.bsky.social this is absolutely random, but… being reminded last night of your book title, and sort of knowing some of your musical taste, and being personally obsessed w this song recently- have you ever heard Flyover Land by the late Marques Bovre? youtu.be/X-9LjhXSx7I?...

There are police officers on site at Kristen Du Mez’s conference keynote tonight in Madison. I have to imagine that’s not standard but reflects the heightened political atmosphere in the country right now.

I just threw out the remains of a fancy squeeze tube of harissa that I’ve been using on rare occasions for… several years. As I directed it towards the trash can, I noticed it says “after opening: keeps three weeks in the refrigerator”.

😳

I discovered her this year, through her cover of REM’s Sweetness Follows. It’s been like discovering a new old friend.

Same with paper magazines… I’ve done hard copy add-ons for Atlantic and Wired in the last few years, thinking “neat, a real paper magazine to look at!” And then I just… don’t.

What the hell happened to reading? I need to try harder I guess.

The Isthmus in Madison (where I first discovered your comic) has been revived as a paper monthly for a while now.

But I have to confess that I seem to have completely lost my ability to open and read paper periodicals. I’ve grabbed copies and they just sit. Side effect of web brain rot I guess.

For a real example of a movie using modern versions of that trick, Sinners w/ Michael B Jordan is amazing.

Sorry, I kind of lost the thread on this. We switched to a new data display that includes a last updated time and better reflects that the stats are periodically refreshed on the page.

Thanks for the input. I enjoy following you on here.

I’m begrudgingly finally watching Gladiator II, and it’s pretty impressive how they did the Patty Duke trick to get Ed Sheeran to play both of the twin emperors.

Just realized that maybe you didn’t see all of my rambling messages since I threaded them onto my first one. Anyway, this is all feeling less urgent and important to me than it was yesterday. Still would be curious if you have an opinion though.

So I’m left wondering if that’s because Google has gone to shit, or because I was really over valuing this concept all along (or best practices have shifted).

I figured this was Nielsen Norman 101 stuff that would be easy to find citations to back up my argument. But my search results did not bear that out much at all.

Anyway… I feel like deep in my bones I have knowledge of a long-standing ux best practice that you should always make it visually clear (and via other means for the non-sighted) that a value has changed. I’m thinking back to the “yellow fade” technique of like 20 years ago as an example.

I was trying to argue this morning that we need a distinct visual indicator when a value changes on a page that has been sitting open - and that the current animation doesn’t serve that purpose since it is for swapping two different values.

Right now these two stats alternate displaying in the same space, for legacy reasons and because of limited space in a horizontal nav/header. Many of us hate it. HTTPS://development.uwflamingos.com (at desktop, or hidden in the hamburger menu at mobile)

We are talking about adding a dynamic data refresh to some stats in our site header, so that users don’t see old cached stats. These are “day of giving” fundraiser sites, so we are talking about gifts made and dollars raised.

Hey @annaecook.bsky.social can I ask you a usability question about best practices for highlighting a bit of updated text on a web page? I am having no luck finding answers on the open shitty internet.

Four men in their late 70s to early 80s standing in a row with guitars on stage, and a drummer of a similar age behind them. They are playing mostly Beatles covers, with the energy of a 60s garage band with 60 years of experience.

This is a band called The Gentlemen. They are performing their 60th anniversary show tonight in Madison, Wisconsin.

They opened for the Dave Clark Five at the Dane County Coliseum in 1967.
