There's been an expectation that jailed immigrants will be rented out to farms & other employers.

AFAIK there hasn't been much of that so far; the reports I'm seeing are that ICE/CBP deports people ASAP.

Sheer lack of capacity to jail enough people to bother renting them out could be an issue.

Besides, the U.S. is rapidly adopting iron fisted rule anyway

core part of the ostensible economic justification for mass deportation was that Americans would rush in to take all the jobs immigrants left, but now unemployment rates for native born Americans are rising and the admin is sending people out to do damage control

Kind of surprises me since so far this century, Republicans have escaped the Midterm Curse more often than not when they've had the presidency. Maybe 2025 spooked them, especially with the polling miss in New Jersey.

Even in 2010 and 2014 they blew several winnable Senate races with teabagger nominees.

In 2022, and to a lesser extent, 2024, special elections suggested a much more Democratic leaning national environment than actually ended up happening in November.

I hope you're right, but I remember hearing things like this in 2020 only for it to be an extremely close election. And strong Dem special election showings in 2022 ended up not being very predictive of that November.

ngl one of my biggest concerns with AI is just that it's good at automating a lot of unglamorous entry level roles where people cut their teeth. It's like how the airline industry thought that there would be an endless supply of cold war pilots, and now have a massive pilot shortage and no pipeline

...regional airlines were mostly only hiring pilots who had the qualifications to upgrade to captain immediately (1000 hours at the airlines), so it was very hard to get your first airline job. And it was and still is incredibly hard to find low time pilot jobs if you didn't have 1,500 hours.

It's true that there is more or less no pipeline for pilots, though. In the early 2020s when the pilot shortage was at its peak there was a weird job market for pilots, where if you already had airline experience it was much easier than usual to get hired at a major airline, but...

There isn't a pilot shortage anymore, but yes. And admittedly the current glut of pilots is mostly because of Boeing and Pratt & Whitney's recent issues postponing aircraft deliveries, so if they get their act together there could be another pilot shortage, though probably less pronounced.

That's the case in the 10k town I grew up in according to people I know who still live there.

As the parent of a 2nd grader with similar stories, it's so infuriating how much the right wing here insists on protecting her from things like choosing a nickname or stories about LGBT families, but not this horror.

Didn't make it past the 1st paragraph but I don't understand what he's talking about, Republicans had a Trifecta in Virginia after the 2010 Census and drew extremely gerrymandered Congressional and State Legislative maps. That's how they held onto the House of Delegates in 2017.
