Graphic shows cover art for a sincere warning about the entity in your home by Jason Arnopp. Caption reads: "5th read:
Pros: very short, cool concept, some genuinely creepy imagery.
Cons: some plot points include insanely implausible medical situations that really took me out of it.
2.25/5 Stars."
Graphic shows cover art for I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones. Caption reads: "6th read:
Catcher in the Rye but for Slashers kind of?
This was my 9th SGJ book and I think it is probably my least favourite, but even in saying that, it has a lot of good in it. I think partially I enjoy some of the tropes and storylines (slasher in real life, somewhat meta character understanding of the situation) better in some of his other works, and maybe this would have felt better in a shorter format. But also, by the ending I was feeling it and stoked like I always am reading anything SGJ writes. 3.75/5 Stars."
Graphic shows cover art for Your Utopia by Bora Chung. Caption Reads: "7th read:
As I mentioned previously, I struggle getting into sci-fi at times, though I love to keep trying. There were some really cool concepts in this though, including the horror-in-mundanity book opener, and A Song For Sleep which genuinely caught me off guard and made me super emotional. 3.25/5 stars."
Graphic shows cover art for Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova. Caption reads: "8th read:
Read for Storygraph's Genre Challenge: young adult novel by a Latinx author.
I definitely have a hard time with YA style novels and this was not my thing. I am not a big fan of books where the main characters don't really seem to have any consequences to their actions and are kinda just amazing at everything right away. Some of the world building was cool, but I had a hard time staying in the plot. 2.5/5 stars."

Graphic showing the cover art for What Feasts at Night by T Kingfisher.
Caption reads:
"2026 books! Gonna try and get better at posting these throughout the year as I go. 1st read: these books by T Kingfisher are what I would call cozy horror. An enjoyable read, some terrifying concepts, but nice and short and adventurous, with a monster-of-the-week sort of feel. 4/5 stars."
Graphic of cover art for What Stalks the Deep by T. Kingfisher. Caption reads: "2nd read:
The third of this series, with the continuing format of mysterious-creature-haunts-or-otherwise-pesters, our protagonists investigate. I liked this one a little less than the other two, but still not a bad read with some great descriptive passages. 3.5/5 stars."
Graphic shows cover art for The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes. Caption reads: "3rd read:
This author has not written much yet but is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. A fascinating, disorienting, vivifying read. There are a few books where the world has invaded and intoxicated my brain (Piranesi, the Left Hand of Darkness, Leech - another Ennes masterpiece), and the Works of Vermin finds itself firmly within that group. The roots of a decaying tree is where our story takes place. A world roiling with monstrous insects and poison, housing an art obsessed predatory fallen society, polluting and perfuming everything they touch while dripping in lavishness. To say nothing of our main characters in their flawed and feral glory. This tale is exhilarating and stylish but also filled with so much heart. 5/5 stars."
Graphic shows cover art for Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. Caption reads: "4th read:
I think I have a slightly harder time getting into thrillers and sci-fi, and this one took a while to really grab me, but by the second half I was pretty invested and couldn't put it down. It is not without flaws, and some of the characters felt a little weak but overall it was pretty cool. 3.75/5 stars."

A year in books! I really enjoyed reading as a way to quiet my brain this year. I didn't want to focus on numbers or rush myself and even with some lower page count months due to genres a bit outside my interests I ended up reading quite a few. I may try for 100 books in 2026 I think!

Petition details
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
Mastercard, Visa, and other payment platforms have been leveraging their power over consumer ability to purchase legal content;
In 2021, Mastercard changed its policies to regulate adult entertainment by preventing the use of its payment platform on numerous adult entertainment sites;
As of July 2025, video game distribution service Steam now cites rule 15, that βadult onlyβ content is not permitted on the platform if it goes against payment processorβs policies. Steam does not describe what content is defined as βadult onlyβ;
As of July 2025, video game distribution website Itch.io has βdeindexedβ all adult NSFW content from browse and search pages. Users that previously purchased legitimate video games cannot access games that have been removed; and
This has set an unsettling precedent of corporate censorship, causing concern in video game development teams, including developers, voice actors, and artists in other creative fields as their livelihoods are in limbo.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to
1. Stop financial discrimination by payment platforms against legal goods and services;
2. Ensure transparency to consumers about content restrictions and the rationale behind them; and
3. Protect creators' rights to make legal adult content and ensure a fair appeals process for any penalized media.
The official Canadian Petition to reign in payment processor censorship has stalled out just under 10k signatures.
This is a reminder for Canadians, this is an OFFICIAL petition that will be responded to. Show your support in protecting our free speech!
