Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.

This is extremely well said.

This is also why VCs and the people tasked with actually building the underlying tech do not have the same incentive structure.

When this happens to me, I assume it's a carryover from an ancient COBOL implementation that they're too terrified to ever replace. One airline, I forget which, mashes the "DR" prefix into my first and seconds names for some bonus nonsense.

Mango Dermatitis After Urushiol Sensitization Prior exposure to poison ivy and poison oak, which are plants in the Anacardiacea family and contain high levels of urushiol, appear to be a risk factor for delayed hypersensitivity reactions to mango...

I have been majorly bummed by a big allergic reaction to mango last year, but I now discover that it's likely a reaction to just the peel! I'm hopeful that I can safely eat mango flesh again. Soon, I shall science this. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

Wow, interesting. I imagine it's for both the added CPU horsepower and for power islandingβ€”to avoid paying the power cost for functionality you're not using. I can't help but feel it's a high-complexity solution, though.

17 Montana Republicans Cross Party Lines, Defeat Anti-Trans Bill After Nonbinary Rep's Speech Representative Howell delivered a speech against SB164, a bill that would charge parents with child abuse for providing gender affirming care even if they were merely driving through the state.

1. Major victory in Montana.

17 Republicans crossed party lines after a strong speech from Representative Howell to defeat a bill that would have charged parents, even those passing through the state, with felony child endangerment for their trans youth.

No matter your station in life, there is astoundingly little separating you from those men in that cage behind Kristi Noem. No charges, no attorneys, no hearings, no trial. Just conjecture and brute force could be enough to justify completely dehumanizing you, too.

Almost definitionally so. "A trusted system or component is one whose failure can break the security policy." β€”Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC), also known as the Orange Book, published by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1985.

How DOGE’s Cuts to the IRS Threaten to Cost More Than DOGE Will Ever Save The Trump administration claims gutting federal agencies will save money, but cutting the IRS means the government collects less taxes. β€œIf you’re interested in the deficit and curbing it, why would…

β€œBy firing us, you’re going to cut down on how much revenue the country brings in,” said an axed IRS specialist who’d been brought in to audit complex tax returns filed by large corporations and wealthy individuals. β€œThis was not about saving money.”

It's doing pretty significant numbers for what it is, so while I understand sharing it won't make a difference for those knee-deep in the cult of personality, I'd say it has a better-than-average chance of resonating.

While BeautifulSoup is nice to work with, I recently discovered the hq tool (HTML query, in analogy to jq). I found with a little bit of fiddling with its syntax, I could get shockingly far in scraping with just curl and hq. :what_gives_people_feelings_of_power_meme.jpg:

We once googley-eyed a friends house, like you do, and as we were preparing to leave, we heard a despairing wail of "OH NO!", as their child had discovered that not even his electric toothbrush had been spared. It warmed several cockles of my heart.

Is Somebody Doing Something?! Yes. Let me break it down for you.

Boosting this excellent article for those folks feeling lost and paralyzed by the US executive branch coup. Things are being done. All resistance is still valuable.

(That being said, I am still pissed Congress isn't willing to get handcuffed for us.)

This should be 25th amendment level conduct. The president ordered water to be released from a random dam in California nowhere near the wildfires and then claimed it would help. That’s literally Mad King behavior.

My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author’s clear intent is pretty shitty.

Some people are saying this is far fetched. But it’s really not. It’s happened before and will happen again unless able bodied people actually stand and fight for disabled people. It’s no secret that people in power think disabled people β€œshould just die.”

When I was director of a system architecture team, we counted patents and we did have schedules to meet when taking a successful concept to market. Past that, it was hard to numerically measure us. We were the only team with unit tests, so no corporate comparison there.

I don't think I've encountered a single corporate metric that ended up having no Bad Unintended Consequences. It's certainly easier to generate meaningful metrics for orgs with repeatable and clear goals and outputs. That doesn't describe highly creative teams trying to rewrite the textbook.
