My small rural town was ruined in the 90s when sitcom production suddenly ended and everyone was laid off at the laughter canning factory.

They outsourced production to a foreign facility run by literal monsters. They retooled the factory to support canning laughter instead of screams. There's a whole documentary about it called Monsters, Inc.
