Small London exhibition looks at the legacy of two Queens of ancient Egypt
In a city full of big exhibitions, sometimes it's the smallest that delights the most, and few are smaller and more delightful than this small glass case in the Egypt Exploration Society.

The art deco entrance hall of Eltham Palace.
The extravagant bathroom of Lady Virginia Courtauld, complete with a marble bathtub set into a gold-tiled niche in the wall, overlooked by a statue of Psyche.
The great hall at Eltham Palace. The original was built by Edward IV in the late 1470s; the Courtaulds restored it when they did their art deco revamp of the palace.
A wall moulding showing a male Egyptian-esque figure, captioned as βThe Ancient Worldβ. The proportions of the figureβs body may suggest it was inspired by art of the Amarna period.
Went on a little jaunt to Eltham Palace today! Art Deco meets medieval, with what looks to be an Amarna-inspired embodiment of βthe ancient worldβ as an Egyptianising figure. @englishheritage.bsky.social #history #heritage #architecture #egypt #egyptology #1930s #egyptomania #london

A relief depicting the female king Hatshepsut running during the Sed festival, taken from her βRed Chapelβ at the Karnak temple complex. She is running alongside the sacred Apis bull, an embodiment of the god Ptah.
Itβs #LondonMarathon day, which is kinda like the Egyptian Sed festival on a huge scale. The βHeb Sedβ was held on the kingβs 30th jubilee (then every 3 years) to ritually renew their rule. The pharaoh ran a course representing the borders of #Egypt, symbolising dominion over the country. #history

Coptic icon depicting St George riding a white horse. Beneath the feet of the horse is a dragon into whose mouth St George drives a spear or lance.
Stone carving (perhaps part of a window) showing a falcon-headed human riding on a horse. The figure drives a spear into a crocodile positioned beneath the horseβs feet. It has been suggested that the horseman represents Horus, the Egyptian god of kingship and the sky, and that the crocodile might be his rival the chaotic god Seth. The object is provenanced to the Nubian site of Faras and dates to the 4th Century CE.
Happy #StGeorgesDay to folks marking it! St George is venerated as βThe Prince of the Martyrsβ in the #Egyptian Coptic Church. Some say his famous dragon-slaying depictions draw on ancient models, such as this Nubian carving of Horus as a Roman horseman spearing a crocodile. #history #archaeology

Image of the goddess Hathor with Queen Nefertari in Nefertariβs tomb (19th Dynasty). Hathor heard a red dress and her head is crowned by two cow horns with a red sun disk between them.
An image of a sheet of papyrus from the will of the Lady Naunakhte (20th Dynasty). This papyrus is displayed in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
Image of the goddess Neith from the tomb of Queen Nefertari (19th Dynasty). She wears a beaded dress and on her head is a lozenge-shaped symbol thought to represent two bows.
Happy #mothersday to the Mums, whether your current vibe is the joyous wine-sated mother #goddess Hathor, or the Lady Naunakhte whose will cuts off the kids who annoyed her. And if your relationship with your mother is hard, I salute your inner Neith, self-created mother of the universe. #egyptology

A painted stone effigy over the tomb of Lancelot Andrewes in Southwark Cathedral, London.
Met some historical movers and shakers today when visiting Southwark Cathedral! John Gower (1327-1408) was an early English poet, a chum of Chaucer who was acquainted with Richard II and Henry IV. Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was on the team that translated the King James Bible.

Statue of the goddess Sekhmet, who has a human female body and a lionessβ head
In many cultures, the βin-betweenβ times and places can be magical but also dangerous. Sekhmet, goddess of war and disease, was powerful during the epagomenal days. Maybe thatβs why Iβve been nursing a festive cold, in punishment for too much frivolous tree-decorating and not enough offerings.

Images of the gods Osiris (top left), Horus (top right), and Seth (bottom left), and the goddesses Isis (bottom middle) and Nephthys (bottom right)
So what about the other 5 days observable in the solar year? The Egyptians stuck them onto the end of the calendar - Egyptologists call them the epagomenal days. The days were given a sacred meaning, each being the birthday of an important deity: 1) Osiris, 2) Horus, 3) Seth, 4) Isis, 5) Nephthys.
