Advocating the Neurodiversity Paradigm

Because our ND life-world is often evaluated on observable phenomenon, there can confusion between ADHD and Austism. Stimming is common in both, but often confused for Austism. Bodily movement either stimulates or reduces sensory phenomena in an attempt to regulate feelings.

My brother is autistic with learning disabilities, and when we were kids he used to go along with the whole Father Christmas thing, winking at me to let me know that he knew Father Christmas was not real, but he wanted to keep the traditions going so as not to spoil it for our mum and dad...

I couldn't agree more. One size fits all services are fit for very few people. Group sessions, different case workers, changing appointment times, unclear expectations, forced eye contact, sensory overloading environments... it's just not good enough.

DSM diagnostic criteria are inadequate for assessment of adults. Whilst 18 different behavioural criteria define attentive and hyperactive components of ADHD, DSM does not recognise challenges in emotion regulation.
