Dallas civil rights leader Peter Johnson on voter apathy and low turnout local elections.
βRefusing to vote only makes politicians less accountable and makes our problems worse.β

Iβm really disappointed in this @politico.com piece. If weβre going to talk about who is writing about DC, we need to talk about WHO is writing about DC, and whether they are good stewards of journalism. π§΅

Nearly 70 percent of Dallas voters approved a charter amendment that would move city elections from May to November. Now it's in the hands of state lawmakers.

An update on Dallasβ new police academy at University of North Texas. The city says it needs more room to build infrastructure for new recruits. Whether that space will be found at the university campus remains to be seen.

Marsha Jackson and her neighbors began fighting Shingle Mountain six years ago. This week, the city approved zoning that will make growing a new one a lot harder.

Dallas has placed its based on a program officials say can cut homelessness in half β but the vote to approve funding for it revealed reservations a few council members have with it.

ββVindicatedβ: Dallas City Council rezones neighborhood that once housed Shingle Mountain
The Dallas City Council voted 12-1 after six years of community effort.β By @devyanichhetri.bsky.social

A six year wait comes to an end. Dallas City Council voted to rezone 522-acres in southern Dallas to protect a neighborhood that once housed a more than 70,000 ton mountain of roofing debris, dumped illegally by a recycling company.

I love my work, and I hope youβll stay with me. My writing and reporting matures every year and Iβm excited to see just how. Onward!
05.12.2024 14:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I leave you with this story about a community effort to create a system of natural trails in an urban forest:
www.dallasnews.com/news/politic...
My latest stories have been all about quality of life: parks and trails!
Itβs one of those places where I joke that my life has gone from looking like an episode in veepβ¦
Much of my work this year has been figuring out the issues at the cityβs crown jewel, Fair Park. The more I learned about the neighborhoods around the park, the more Iβve wanted to cry. This was a story I wrote with Leah Waters. Itβs one of many, with more to come:
www.dallasnews.com/news/politic...
I also dove deeper into the police and fire pension systemβs dismal investment performance:
www.dallasnews.com/news/politic...
Funding pensions and its impact on finances has been a big issue for the city. I wrote a story about the ways City Hall was trying to come up with extra dollars to fund the shortfalls and how they were looking at public transit. It stirred quite the conversation:
www.dallasnews.com/news/politic...
Since then, Iβve broken a couple stories here and there. Iβve written about the Dallas Wings moving from Arlington to Dallas. I followed that up with a story about public funds used for sports facilities and whether they do what local leaders say theyβd do:
www.dallasnews.com/news/2024/06...
My first story was a multi-layered fight that sort of became my first lesson into understanding themes that Iβd run into in pretty much most every story:

And then right before the primaries, I got a job at the Dallas Morning News. I was leaving South Carolina for Texas and moving deeper into local journalism and covering a municipality.
05.12.2024 14:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One of my last stories at the Greenville News was focused on the experiences of the local Muslim community and how they were dealing with the death of a young girl killed by an Israeli airstrike:

These are the stories I did same time, last year:

Itβs interesting to see how I covered Biden. This story came not too long after the local Democratic Party was reckoning with its own racial gaps and a young county chair told me he was quitting the party due to a lack of primary, among other things.

In January, I was still in South Carolina as a politics reporter. The Palmetto state couldnβt have been more active at the time. It was primary season and the state was first in the nation for the democrats and first in the south for the republicans.
