Here’s what I see really happening 👇 We were offered a bad contract. We voted NO. The same offer came back (plus a “free COVID vaccine”). We voted NO again — 90% of us. We gave the government lots of time to come back with something better. They didn’t. When the strike began, they refused to meet for six days. When they finally did, we brought a fair proposal — they offered nothing back. Teachers had nothing to vote on. They told us to “go back to work” (after locking us out). They still refuse to talk about the two biggest issues: 👉 Class size caps 👉 Classroom complexity 📊 Let’s fact check Dani: Statement: “The ATA rejected their offer.” ❌ FALSE – The government didn’t put an offer forward. Statement: “The ATA hasn’t sent an offer.” ❌ FALSE – The ATA has sent many offers — all rejected outright. TEBA has not put forward a single counteroffer. Statement: “The ATA needs to come back to the table.” ❌ FALSE – The ATA has been at the table. The government/TEBA is stalling. They spent over a week “reviewing” the last proposal and still didn’t respond with anything. I know everyone — myself included — wants nothing more than to be back in the classroom. Many have said their child’s learning is being deeply impacted by missing these days of instruction. I understand that. But the truth is, the learning environment the Alberta government has created in classrooms impacts children’s education every single day of the school year. If these days of disruption can help correct the conditions our students are learning in, the learning gains ahead will be exponential — for months and years to come. Something has to change. We’re fighting for kids, schools, and the future of public education in Alberta. Before you outright believe the ads — ask a teacher. We’re not the enemy.

The ATA has presented many offers, while TEBA has not made a single counter-offer. The government refuses to address class size caps at the bargaining table, the major point of the negotiation. They instead threaten to legislate teachers back to work and strip them of their charter rights.

Introducing legislation to force an agreement with teachers would mean invoking the not withstanding clause to suspend constitutionally protected rights of workers to free assembly. The clause has never been used this way before and would set a dangerous precedent.
