1. Artists used to be able to supplement their page rate a bit by selling the original art. Now that many are working digitally, that's not an option.
2. I think the average advance from a book publisher for a graphic novel is probably even worse than the page rate that monthly comics publishers pay

For graphic novels, especially adult genre fiction, it's incredibly helpful to review it online, talk about it, recommend it to a friend—adult fiction in the graphic novel space is difficult to place, and nothing convinces readers that they'll like a book more than the personal testimonial.

Fr I struggle to tell apart the mainstream stuff lol (polaris vs enchantress vs dc enchantress) 😓

My guess is oversaturation. Its hard to keep up with the endless superheroes marvel and dc pumps out, let alone indie ones.

Unless you build your heroes around a niche not seen in the dm (i.e. stuff like The Pride) I think itll be really hard to compete in that genre.
