Where Did That Promising Scientist Disappear To? Family leave policies leave women faculty behind

@emilylattiephd.bsky.social + my @sciam.bsky.social 2019 op-ed. Sadly it’s more timely than ever, given that current attacks on science and higher education make some of us at higher risk of exiting this line of work than others. www.scientificamerican.com/blog/voices/...

NIH Grants Fueled $95 Billion In FY 2024 Economic Activity, Finds New Report National Institutes of Health grants generated almost $95 billion in economic activity nationwide in FY 2024 according to a new report by United for Medical Research.

New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024.

That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved.

Show me a better investment than that.

Exclusive: NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be terminated, according to documents obtained by Nature.

NEW: The NIH has begun terminating grants for active projects studying gender identity, DEI, environmental justice, climate change, among other topics.

At least 16 termination letters have already been sent β€” and hundreds more are coming, people inside NIH tell me.

A week, which made me realize I could be available for answering questions in one-off meetings or very light reviewing/revising but not much more. There's no right way to do it, but I fiercely protect my non-work hours 😊

Yeah, awesome question! I had gotten my academic work down to a traditional 9-5 for the 2-3 years before I left my faculty position and knew that I wasn't interested in substantially changing that work schedule for my new role which would also be a 9-5. So I planned for no more than 2ish hours

Thanks for raising this point! I was fortunate to have a long lead time to transition, and had a well-documented plan. Having lots of conversations in advance about what I thought I could and couldn't do once I left my faculty position felt like a lot of prep work but was well worth it.
