41, autistic enby. Self diagnosis is valid, vaccines don't cause autism. My autism defines me. Yes it does. Pronouns are they/them or she/her.

All I can think about with today's #AutChat topic is that when I was considered youth, most people didn't have cellphones, and social media didn't exist.

Even wifi was uncommon.

Pokemon cards came out in my late teen years?

But we did have Sailor Moon.

I think this is the problem, because I think people just do not notice at all.

And I think this is the primary issue.

Like, I feel like if people around me noticed, we would not have foods that make me feel sick.

It feels like an easy problem to solve, and it is not?!?

I don't know, I kinda suffer?!?!?

Usually when it comes to foods I'm sensitive to, it's in a group setting where I don't have a lot of say in terms of what I can eat.

Like, there's no alternatives to the thing that makes me physically ill.

I haven't figured this one out.

[cn:mention of surgery] Oh, you know what, I did recently have my gallbladder removed, so this might affect how my body processes certain types of oils.

So the things I have sensitivities to, I might be more sensitive to these things now.

It's hard to say, because I tend not to eat foods I have sensitivities to when I'm alone -- it's only when I'm with groups.

And so I just haven't been with groups that have these foods for whatever reason?!?

I think my sensitivities will be unchanged, though.

Mostly, for me, it's oily/greasy foods that can cause sensitivities for me.

I'll feel nauseous after eating greasy foods. This includes some kinds of sausage, and also sometimes deep dish pizza.

However, sometimes just drinking milk along with it can prevent this from happening.

We used to post Wakelet transcripts of our weekly Twitter chats to autchat.com. We also linked to them on the #AutChat tag and on Facebook.

However, at this point in our transition to BlueSky, we don’t know how to integrate Wakelet/similar. For the time being, we do not make transcripts.

#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc).

We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.

#AutChat A4: Asexuality is often not taken as a serious sexuality. And autistic people are not always taken seriously as adults. And people with alexithymia are not taken seriously as a valid experience. I experience all 3, and when I experience one from ppl who should know better, that sucks a lot.

There is no autism epidemic.

There is only better identification of existing autistic people.

Anyone claiming otherwise is either ignoring, denying—or does not understand—contemporary autism research, or is selling something.

It's also a good time for researchers to speak up if they find their research has been incorrectly used to push "autism epidemic" narratives.

So was this another episode of "tell me you're autistic without telling me you're autistic"?

Uhh....

Do I disclose my autism?!?

Not explicitly, but I think that people will have their suspicions.

I have no idea how other people flirt.

I am not sure how I am supposed to compare.

"But how do people flirt with you, Solveig?"

I do not know.

#AutChat A3: I don't flirt, but I did find it interesting when I surveyed autistic and non-autistic people about "pursuing someone" for a relationship. Basically none of autistics did so if they the person indicated they weren't interested. *ALL* of the non-autistics said they pursued anyhow.

It's kind of like, it's really easy for some people to confuse what would otherwise be a normal conversation as flirting, because they're not used to having this sort of interaction with other people, at least in non-romantic settings.

#AutChat

07.09.2025 20:37 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I've seen this at least referenced, but I'll say that sometimes people will confuse just normal conversation as flirting... as in...

There were definitely times in my life when someone noticing me at all felt like they were flirting with me, when they were not?!?

#AutChat

07.09.2025 20:35 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Basically, flirting requires safety, or a feeling of safety.

A lot of people, especially certain demographics don’t have that.

The more someone flirts, the better they get at it.

So, how much of the “Autistics can’t flirt” stereotype derives from that?

All I know is that I don't like being called sexy. Like, ever.

EVER.

I would not be happy if a hypothetical spouse said that to me.
