White breasted nuthatch at a feeder. Like most nuthatches most of the time, the bird is oriented head down. This is a profile shot with the feeder at the right and the nuthatch facing left, holding a sunflower seed in her mouth. The bird has white cheeks, throat, breast, and flanks; blue-gray wings trimmed in white, brown-red undertail feathers; a short blue-gray tail; and a handsome black crown. The whole thing adds up to a sweet an formal presentation. The background is flat eggshell.

Went down to the local patch today but there was nothing doing. The local great blue heron was perched in a distant tree, the pine warblers were absent, and the mergansers refused to leave the far corner of the lake

But back home there was a bona fide rager at the feeder
