Today in my graduate seminar on race and ethnicity we are finishing up The Sociology of W.E.B. Du Bois by José Itzigsohn and Karida Brown. It's a superb book and a great way to introduce students to a Du Boisian approach to sociology.

This was a really touching article on the life and death of Michael Burawoy. 47 years at UC Berkeley. He loved the community and the community loved him back.

Therefore, I suggest that bolstering support for institutions and programs that help a wider array of people develop a positive relationship with nature may be one significant part of more sustainable societies.

If more people are going to care about nature, it is important to buttress the conditions by which people learn to care about it.

I also suggest that understanding this process of knowledge-emotion links and self extension can help us better understand how to create more sustainable societies and address inequalities in access to nature.

Therefore, I make the claim that this process of knowledge-emotion links and self-extension can help us understand many cases where people care so deeply that they act to care for cultural products, people, non-humans, sports teams, and a wide variety of other entities and beings.

For example, opera fans get so invested in opera that they end up trying to defend opera from “attacks” when operas are too unconventional.

The paper also advances a general version of that argument: whenever people intertwine knowledge and emotion with anything they are interested in, over time this may lead to them extending their sense of self into it and then trying to protect it

For example, if someone learns how to identify many bird species and learns to find birds exciting, they may think about themselves as someone who loves birds, and that extension of self can lead to wanting to care for birds.

I found at this nature centre, people linked knowledge and emotion with different parts of nature, which gave them opportunities to extend their sense of self into nature.

I investigate why spending time in nature often leads to care for it. The article is based on a 5-year ethnographic project I conducted at a nature centre in Toronto, where I volunteered as a nature teacher for people of all ages and interviewed 50 people involved with the centre.
