Homemade bread cut thinnish

Made bread for this beef and onion garlic soup I made.

When I showed several non-white POC friends and several ladies to boot, and asked if it was acceptable the range of like characters, they were like WHOA!! I see people who look like me! Monolids! Dark skin shades, multiple in my tones! That hair texture is exactly like mine (4c) and more.

But that's frankly a bullshit idea. I wasn't asking for a cookie I was asking if they liked my art, if they enjoyed the expressions, if they appreciated that I was working on coloring, that I was doing all these new, exciting things. I had MADE all of these faces, changed from TV actors expressions.

I think one frustration I had with it, is it felt performative. It felt very, I know that diversity is important, so I am going to tell you that you need to do more, you need to try harder, without in any way acknowledging how much you HAVE done, because you don't, as they put it "get a cookie"

Like, this is important not to just about face and decide well, I tried and it wasn't appreciated (by one person) but that's not what I want to do going forward. I want to keep working harder, re-evaluating, and doing what I can to be better in my art and writing.

I am committing myself, ALSO, to not stopping on diversity and inclusion just because I am irritated how my friend approached their reasonable desire for more diversity in general with a sledge hammer to what diversity I had.

Sometimes people you care very deeply about are not going to be able to "get" your things. It's not always for them.

I am committed to not allowing that to keep me from writing and drawing.

But 1) I am queer
2) I celebrate queerness in my stories
3) Sometimes I write horror and horror doesn't care if they're queer, sometimes people die

and this all means I just don't trust this person to read my stuff and be willing to see where the context is. The attempts. The desires.

And I guess that's ok! I'm still friends with this person, they are lovely, and supportive, and NOT someone I am going to talk at lengths with about my stories outside of fandom (how we met) because they want to be supportive on my original stuff, then get upset when gay person dies "bury the gays"

I will include enough of various groups that if I pick one as a "villain" it's not going to be "representative" of that group. I'm not just going to have the often villainized groups seen as "villains" by my narratives. I will work hard.

It will never be hard enough for some folks. Even loved ones.

IDK where I am going with this except to vent that like, I am done with changing how I do things based on the ideas of people who do not acknowledge where I am coming from, where I want to go, and how I want to get there.

I will always continue to include diversity, because we live in it.

If it gets it working at all, that's efficiency in my mind. I do something where I transcribe non-fiction passages from various books I have, then shift into writing what I didn't want to write, because by comparison, I am now excited to write it. Very similar, but slightly different approach.
