It's been complicated because of that, but also very rewarding, so looking forward to hearing other people's thoughts about our approach!

It will also be my first time in Birmingham so do share all your tips if you have any!

I will be talking about the results, but also about mixed-methods approaches and triangulation; this paper is the first corpus-assisted analysis of the data, after several studies primarily employing interactional sociolinguistics.

Getting ready to go to Corpus Linguistics in Birmingham #CL2025 next week! Will be presenting the paper I've written with @mathewingram.com and Isolde van Dorst. We've compared patients' and health care providers' discourses in chronic pain consultations, using a corpus-assisted DA approach.

The thing about interdisciplinary work is everyone gets to misunderstand you from a unique angle

I'm not really sure what I want to say, except maybe that I'm worried and sad and feel so much solidarity with academics and people in all these suffocating regimes.

Although right now, our position here remains incredibly comfortable and privileged, in this world and the state it's in. We'll just keep going, I guess, no fleeing or freezing or fawning, but keeping all of this research alive and well so that people can return to a healthy field once they can.

And I just generally have a sense that everywhere, also here, we (academia, esp. the humanities) have to fight more for our existence - I have no idea what the future will bring.

But in a way it feels weird, with everything that's going on in global academia. In the US, my project would not be funded with government funds atm because of the some of the concepts in the project proposal - sociocultural diversity in health care is a key aspect of it

My colleagues and I have just wrapped up the selection procedure (some admin notwithstanding) for a PhD project about birth care communication, which I will start supervising after the summer. I am really excited, and grateful that @uantwerpen.be provides a starting grant to all new professors

Ik begrijp niet goed waarom evidence-based zorg zo achteloos verweven mag zijn met dit soort zorgwekkende pseudowetenschappelijke praktijken. In tijden van globale onzekerheid hangt alles samen, dus ook hoe we framen wat (toegankelijke) zorg is, en hoe we zoeken naar mentaal en sociaal welzijn.

(om nog maar te zwijgen van aanverwante pseudowetenschap zoals bioresonantie etc).

Sinds ik terug in België woon sta ik er ook echt van versteld hoeveel kinesisten/fysiotherapeuten hun werk ook combineren met orthomoleculaire 'zorg', of hoeveel paramedische praktijken (met bijvoorbeeld een kinesist en psycholoog) ook een orthomoleculair therapeut hebben.

De orthomoleculaire trend is er zo eentje bij ik echt met pijn in het hart aanschouw, na jaren geleden al onderzoek te hebben gedaan naar hoe dit soort supplementenbedrijven hun communicatie vormgeven om zo medisch en klinisch mogelijk te klinken, vaak ook met een koloniaal oriëntalistisch tintje.

Jeetje meteen naar alle grote kerndebatten binnen taalkunde en taalfilosofie. Ze maken her je niet makkelijk!

Very much looking forward to being back in Ghent, and to giving a lecture as part of a course that I actually taught back in my Ghent days! These full circle moments are really such a rewarding part of being in academia.

On my way to Ghent to teach a guest lecture to advanced economic English students. I will talk about corporate determinants of health, and how professional and corporate voices participate and co-construct understandings of health and illness in our society.

tbh i didn't know one person could destroy the global economy

ok so a colleague just walked in and asked whether I wanted to get ice cream!! Great minds and all. And it turns out our cafeteria stocks a few flavours so there ARE opportunities, even on campus. What a blessed day

at times I still miss my former Ghent office (both the people and the location) because whenever we had the first bit of spring weather (like today), we went out to get ice cream, and there were plenty of great options nearby. The Antwerpen campus is also nice, but sadly no ice cream opportunities 😭

Klinkt dat interessant of ken je iemand die hier interesse zou willen hebben, deel dan gerust de vacature. En als iemand vragen heeft rond het solliciteren kan die mij contacteren (zie vacaturetekst voor gegevens).

Het is een mooie kans om taalwetenschappelijk kijken te combineren met veldwerk in een unieke setting; om te werken aan maatschappelijk belangrijk onderzoek; en intussen toe te werken naar een doctoraatstitel.

Ik ben op zoek naar een gemotiveerde kandidaat die verder wil in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het snijpunt van taalkunde en gezondheidssociologie, en meer specifiek wil onderzoeken hoe we praten over en communiceren tijdens (interacties in de) geboorte en geboortezorg.
