I want a good modern peripheral for playing primarily modern games. Being that nearly every single one of those relies on the left thumbstick far more than a D-pad, said thumbstick should get the prime real estate

The thing is that I don't want it to play retro games. For reasons I'm not particularly interested in elaborating on, I can't use a keyboard. I also find the idea of a better PlayStation controller silly, because the only reason the PlayStation controller is still the shape that it is, is tradition.

This is what I don't like about Valve. It's their way or no way. The whole design of the controller upsets me. Why in the year 2025 are we prioritising a D-pad over the left thumbstick? The touch pads look profoundly inconvenient. Why is this setting not a switch or a button? Why the GRIPS?

And I can tell you from personal experience, the back glass is about to fall out. I don't know what those hinges are made of, but they corrode and then crumble like stale pastry.

old games in particular are often a chore to play nowadays too, save states add some quality of life while only compromising the withdrawal from quarter munching arcade machines early console games were afflicted with. It's nice to be able to play those casually, not just as a hardcore enthusiast

I think save states are good. I don't think it should in any way be seen as lessening achievements unless it's spammed to the point they're just winning by attrition
