I had predicted they’d cave after a week because they had no cards. That the activists got the moderates to wait this long is a credit to their political strength, even if I fundamentally disagree with their hostage-taking approach.

It’s an adequate deal. They raised the salience of the issue, much more than I expected. But frankly, I don’t think it’s a great idea to set a precedent that the minority party gets big policy concessions every time they shut down the government because some day the dynamic will be flipped.

Give me a break. None of those wins you got last week changed the makeup of Congress. You can’t get what you want out of the minority, so use the messaging wins you got here and try to actually win some Congressional elections.

They get a promise on an ACA vote and some forward momentum on year-long bipartisan spending bills. It’s a “cave,” I guess, but they raised the salience of the issue.

It’s not about Trump, it’s about the Democrats. They’re the ones keeping the shutdown going, because it’s working out better than even they imagined. But there’s enough of them who know the game is up and they have no more cards to play that this will probably et wound down this week.

There’s real pain happening now (SNAP, workers haven’t been paid, flight issues, etc) and they’re supposed to go on recess next week. It’s now the longest shutdown ever and they’re supposed got winning campaigns out of it, move on to the next phase.

Been predicting about this Friday since mid-October and see no reason to change that prediction now
