A dead Puffin lies on wet sand, its black and white feathers darkened and slick against the beach. The bird rests on its side, wings folded, with its distinctive orange bill clearly visible against the pale sand.

Heartbreaking: Right now, thousands of Puffins are washing up along our coasts and further afield.

It is devastating to see.

These birds are Red-listed in the UK and already under serious pressure.

Mass deaths like this, known as a โ€œseabird wreckโ€, can take years for colonies to recover from...

This study found very strong evidence of this, observing over 500 whales and 4,000 interactions over 20 years. They learn from the whales with whom they spend the most time

I just did the dumbest thing of my entire career to prove a much more serious point.

I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users Iโ€™m a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion

People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. Iโ€™ll explain how I did it

Sibling interference in motherโ€“offspring interactions reveals jealous reactions in wild baboons Abstract. Whether non-human animals can experience complex emotions like jealousy remains debated. In humans, jealousy is particularly salient in sibships,

So happy to share that my last PhD chapter is finally out in Proc. B! We looked at chacma baboon offspring interference in grooming sessions between their mom and siblings, and asked whether these behaviours could represent jealous reactions.

A collection of six ominous bird valentines set against a background of pink hearts. In the first one, a Canada Goose looks angry and hisses and the text says "Baby, I'll make you fall head over heels if you approach within 10m of my nest." In the second, an American white pelican opens its mouth to eat the reader and the text says "There are plenty of fish in the sea, but I want this one." In the third valentine, a Black Vulture looks suspiciously at the reader and the text says "I will love you until you die. And after that, I'll love you even more." A Southern Cassowary stands proudly against the heart-covered background. The text says "My wattles are red. My head is blue. My deadly reputation has been somewhat overblown, but I'd kill for you." In the fifth valentine, a Northern Giant-Petrel stands open-billed next to a large brown furry object, and the text says "Let's seal the deal by sharing a 3000 kg elephant seal carcass." In panel 6, a happy-looking Bearded Vulture holds a bone in its beak, and the text says "I love every part of you, especially your bones."

The UK *is* losing a generation of scientists.

I know lots of brilliant people who have left their jobs / the country because of the limited jobs & funding.

Once lost, they cannot ever be replaced.

The UK government is overseeing the death of UK academic science, and it doesn't seem to care.
