On being Hong Konger Canadian in Canada. Also on Christianity, intersectionality, psychology. Not posting about Hong Kong so much as being Hong Konger Canadian.

This shot shows a cross at the top of the video frame, makes me wonder if Christians are associated with these folks.

Steve Tsang gave this talk a couple of months ago.
Mostly knew what he was talking about, learned a thing or two as well.
Chineseness being a construct... It's not something I think about a lot but an important talk nonetheless.

First bad sleep day in 2026. Anxious about career prospects related to social service sector in Toronto, among other things.
Haven't been posting on socials much but the world seems to be struggling along. Feeling a bit burned out to end 2025.
Realized that you come from a relatively bougie background a while back, but you are using your privilege for good to be making a positive contribution imo...

After the Scripture reading, the reverend who went to the stage immediately complemented the person who created the video and said, "that was a great song... "that was a great video."
This is just a case of Evangelicals using technology, but I really have second thoughts about this case.
When I was watching the video its original intended speed, I didn't notice so the distortions much. The video is intentionally sped up at points. At the end of the video the congregation is heard to be clapping. The video is followed by Scripture reading.
Original video of service here.
4:57 mark showing the AI-generated image depicting children in an in between frame. The text on the video says "intergeneration".
Another in between animation which goes from a photo of young children to older children, where the transition is of distorted the bodies of children being contorted and flying across the floor. You don't notice this at high speed so much but this is where the technology is right now.
15.11.2025 05:23 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 03:53 mark of video showing congregants entering a worship service generated by AI-video generation, with visible distortions in the frame
These are in between frames between actual photos taken, but this is some dystopian looking stuff happening here when you can use AI-generation to drop "congregants" into a worship setting.
15.11.2025 05:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The video stars an AI actress, but why this specific portrayal of a human being fitting for this? An able-bodied and physically fit woman dressed in jeans and knit sweater?
15.11.2025 05:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The underlying song and lyrics are supposedly 100% human according to the description, but when there's so much here that's AI generated, it's really difficult to trust what exactly that 100% means. The degree to which this is theft and a misuse of environmental resources what I'm wondering about.
15.11.2025 05:10 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Probably the most use of AI-based tools in a worship service that I have ever seen, and in ways that I really have reservations. Happened in a Chinese megachurch in California. This was an AI-assisted video with music.

"Wishes and prayers will surely be fulfilled", the poster says. Photo taken just outside of the Greater Toronto Area.
Part of what was so troubling was seeing blatant promotions for "fee for merit" posters.
I have respect for Buddhist philosophies, but this is not the kind of stuff I endorse.
I was at a Chinese Buddhist temple in the Greater Toronto Area, it brought up mixed sentiments about it. It makes me wonder about the extent to which identifying Chinese is inherently potentially prone to settler colonialism.
13.10.2025 02:31 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The thing is, for those who embrace hyphenated identities, there's no judgement for those who don't. This doesn't really have anything to do with being on the political left or right in particular, but there are those on the political right who have made that distinction.
04.10.2025 15:33 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I recently realized that some on the political right in Canada attempt to delegitimize or silence hyphenated identities — a tendency not mirrored by those outside the right. If you identify as ___-Canadian, you’re often accused of engaging in “identity politics.”
