Massive and intentional destruction of one of the largest engines of the US economy and foundations for our vibrant culture. We prospered from attracting the best and brightest from around the world who all wanted to study and work here. Now we build walls and threaten those who do come

It’s not just the dollars. It’s the goodwill the US generates, the connections we create student by student—what a devastating loss

Heh. My wife told me yesterday people in local Facebook groups are complaining it’s too cold for Musikfest. Apparently it’s not a party if you don’t have heat exhaustion. 😂

Run stats

Three weeks of training done, 11 weeks to come. Long run today, a 5-miler in unseasonably cool August temps (56 degrees at 7 am and I am not complaining after the humid spell!).

77 days to go. #hmtraining #runsky

Found myself playing third basemen who did a few turns at second base in the middle column and decided to complete the set.

Stock Market Posts Worst Week in Months on Renewed Economic Fears

I don't get it. Don't these investors know Trump fixed the problem? 😅

There are people who will buy a meme stock but they ain't gonna pin their entire portfolio on this. Rare instance where I believe markets are rational.

He's the kind of fool who thinks cooked up jobs numbers will get his supporters to open their wallets when they are actually the type of cast votes based on the eggs price tag. Data never penetrates that kind of way of seeing the world.

i think the correct way to think about the lonely boy question is not "how do we reach out to incels?" but "how do we make sure that a teenage boy looking for romantic advice isn't flooded with right-wing propaganda?"

Like, we have a few house project things we want to do here but are in hoarding money mode for the eventual recession instead of hiring contractors (a group who by and large probably voted for him).

I kind of marvel at how dumb this particular kind of authoritarianism is. Dictators prop themselves up by having at least the veneer of order and economic stability even if it's corrupt. He's just smashing everything and even his own supporters aren't so dumb they won't stop spending money.

Imagine running a business when you can't trust any of the numbers that guide big spending and investment decisions. 😅

This is dumb stuff you do when you're trying to ruin your economy.

Journalism 101: A headline like this MUST include a clause like "providing no evidence at all". Doing otherwise is misinformation.

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences”

Which is why, if you’re referring to the propulsion system, it’s polite to say “nuclear-POWERED submarines.” Unless your intended consequence is drawing attention away from the BLS data and *hem* Epstein *kaff*, I guess.

Passage: "The trajectory of all this is well rehearsed at this point. Progressive posters register their genuine outrage. Reactionaries respond in kind by cataloging that outrage and using it to portray their ideological opponents as hysterical, overreactive, and out of touch. Then savvy content creators glom on to the trending discourse and surf the algorithmic waves on TikTok, X, and every other platform. Yet another faction emerges: People who agree politically with those who are outraged about Sydney Sweeney but wish they would instead channel their anger toward actual Nazis. All the while, media outlets survey the landscape and attempt to round up these conversations into clickable content—search Google’s “News” tab for Sydney Sweeney, and you’ll get the gist. (Even this article, which presents individual posts as evidence of broader outrage, unavoidably plays into the cycle.)"

One reason I want my students to study internet culture is because media coverage often does a poor job discerning issues from the outrage that surrounds an issue once it goes viral. Media covers it as a singular thing and that has the effect of putting bad-faith actors on the same level as critics.
