this might be my favorite thing i’ve made: orange passion fruit marmalade. the rind is seville oranges and the flesh is cara cara oranges. the range of bitter to sweet in one bite is the most intense i’ve ever experienced!

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce.

Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.

The barrage is dizzying. They want us disoriented and in despair. To defend ourselves and others, focus is key. Play by play reactions to every harmful act and utterance won’t help you or others. Focus on what you can do (& where you can be most impactful), and remember that you can’t do everything.

i know that it sounds all heady and jargon-y, but it’s actually a somatic feeling that alerts me and that experience regularly. i want to pay attention to that feeling and follow its lead.

i don’t want to invest in relationships with people who are invested in Empire or weaponize the language of radicalism to replicate the tools of Empire.

how can i find & build with people who are “divested from liberalism,” as Dean says?

there were so many important nuggets, maybe i’ll transcribe some of my notes soon, but the one thing that hit me like a ton of bricks was Dean saying, “it’s a problem if you are the most radical person you know; they are pulling you down!”

part of the burnout comes from thinking our organization does/can/will do things differently. maybe if we accept that it is a failed project, we can still do the work within the org while providing resistance towards abolition.

reimagining by imagining that what we are already doing is amazing. story-telling to remember that little garden we grew and shared the veggies with our neighbors. we don’t know everything, but we know a lot already.

there is no one utopia. utopia and dystopia exist at the same time. what’s our next utopia, live with it, figure out what’s wrong with it, and build the next iteration of the utopia.
