After the Alaska & Washington summits, Europe held the line, keeping Ukraine central to transatlantic diplomacy. But Trumpโs commitment is uncertain, Putin disruptive & security guarantees unresolved.

While the #EUUK Summit on 19 May delivered a new Security and Defence Partnership, #Russia's hybrid threats and interference in Europe are here to stay.
In my @euiss.bsky.social commentary, I argue that EU-UK cooperation on this front should be urgently operationalised.

We are upping the pressure on Russia to end its war.
I welcome the agreement on the 17th package of sanctions.
It will target more of Russiaโs shadow fleet, which is illegally shipping oil for revenues to fund Putinโs aggression.
Sanctions drain Russiaโs war chest.
While claiming to seek peace, Russia launched a deadly airstrike on Kyiv.
This isn't a pursuit of peace, itโs a mockery of it.
The real obstacle is not Ukraine but Russia, whose war aims have not changed.
Trump blaming the victim - once again.
This isnโt about building peace. But a way for Trump to withdraw support. He wants out.
Ukraine keeps fighting because Russia keeps attacking it every day.
The task for Europeans is to keep supporting Ukraine. This is both in our interest and feasible.
"Given the Trump administrationโs skepticism toward NATO and the defense of its transatlantic allies, a U.S.-Russian agreement could increase Moscowโs willingness to launch unconventional attacks in Europe".
