Increasingly often, books I want to read are not coming up in the uni library catalogue but are nonetheless held electronically by the library, hidden away in a database. To find them, you have to search the particular database directly. What's the point of a system that hides its actual holdings?

Our Director, @cathamclarke.bsky.social, might have mentioned that she has a book out (we have had a sneak preview and we love it), but don't take our word for it, you can hear Catherine, this autumn, on BBC Radio 4.

Exactly. Plus spellings. Also this blog post by @sharonhoward.bsky.social - especially the bit about the different ways Alice Thornton refers to her son Robin/Robert - should give pause for thought about why keyword searches alone are not satisfactory.

When you look at Rhodes town, it seems unchanging with its castellations, its fortifications, its palaces, its cobbled streets . . . But of course, it isn’t.

This is why I bang on, whenever I can, about the value of having a browseable archive catalogue, and, you know, browsing through it: rather than thinking you can just zap into a specific target.

Let's fix it for freelancers
YouTube video by ALCS (Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society) Let's fix it for freelancers

Last month, the Government announced they would be appointing a Freelance Champion to represent creative freelancers, something we have long campaigned for.

While we wait to see the details, here's a reminder of why it is needed:

Yes. AI cannot do historical research, in part because most archives aren't digitised, and it can't pick out the gaps and context and nuances of those archives that are digitised.

Loving Ella Armitage's description of barrows in her 1901 article on "Non-Sepulchral Earthworks of Yorkshire": "Many barrows are protected by a wall of stones, or a bank or ditch, intended either to keep the public out or to keep the ghost in".
