FOUR OF WANDS: JOIN A RALLY In the Four of Wands we see a contained space for active Fire energy, often a social celebration-which reminds me of the kind of pro-test called a rally, which is usually the type of action people think of when they think of a protest. If you ever get involved in any march, demonstration, or rally, I guarantee someone will tell you that protest doesn't work. Either protest isn't polite enough and doesn't honor the "proper channels" for making change, or it's too polite and "merely symbolic." The smear campaign against protest has been going strong for decades. Protest isn't a tool. If you expect it to be a direct action to stop what's happening, it doesn't work. It's not that. Protest doesn't dis-mantle or disarm. Protest isn't a carefully honed argument with a direct line of communication to the powers that be. If you expect it to convince anyone to change policy, it doesn't work. That's not what protest is for. Protest builds up morale. It shows solidarity. It lets those who are suffering know that there are people who care, and it encour-ages those who want the suffering to end to be braver in saying so because they're not alone. It creates the cultural context that makes direct action and policy change more possible. It's also a meeting place for like-minded people to connect.
