Concern and embarrassment Grow rank. Once they have come home there is no cursing. Fires disturb the evening. No one can hear the story. Or sometimes people just forget Like a child. It took me months To get that discipline banned, and what is the use, To ban that? You remain a sane, yet sophisticated, person: Rooted in twilight, dreaming, a piece of traffic.

Banned/challenged books are often difficult reads with jarring content, but we can't shield ourselves nor our children from the realities of the world forever - it's better to build empathy and understanding through books, especially by reading books by/about marginalized people.

Near the end of my time there, the student started coming to my classroom. One time, they attacked another student and the rest of us had to run out of the room to another place where we hid. This was not the first time I encountered a child who struggled like this. 🧵 2/3

I keep thinking about how before I got my current job I worked at a title I school where there was an incredibly understaffed special education program. In the program was a student whose behavior would regularly cause us to go on a soft lock down in our classrooms

We are reading Last Night at the Telegraph Club by @malindalo.bsky.social, so we’ve spent some time with her blog updates on the book being challenged and banned before making these. I wish I could share all of them!

I’m working on focusing on the things I can control. So, I taught my students how to make zines. Who knows, maybe they’ll need to spread the word about something one day. Many of them chose to write about their opinions related to book banning.
