Great Chefs/Great Cities and Great Chefs of the World. High educational value AND the magical combo of Mary Lou Conroy’s narration, tasteful Spanish guitar, and the often perturbed chef subjects who seem not to want to be on camera at all.

Many thanks to Mike Corrao for the great questions, and B.R. Yeager for editing a killer issue.

It was the Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon that caught my eye in the opening scenes. Impeccable choice of getaway car.

If they cut references to lobster salad sandwiches, celery with a tiny cardboard salt shaker, or a cup of vanilla pudding with chocolate sprinkles on top I’d ask for a refund

Don’t snooze on Wanda GΓ‘g. Beyond β€œMillions of Cats,” which is everywhere, there’s β€œThe Funny Thing” (doll-eating dog/dragon creature) and β€œSnippy & Snappy” (sibling mice). Very stylish hand lettering, slightly weird b/w illustrations and they’re nearly 100 years old.

I remember being ridiculously enraptured by Crimes of the Future in 2022. Not a great a film! It had just been 11 years since I’d been to a movie theater.

LA people: Tomorrow, Friday 5/30, I’ll be introducing a screening of the excessively grim 1981 German film CHRISTIANE F. at VidΓ©othΓ¨que! 8 p.m. Cypress Park.

It will NOT be the dubbed version (sorry if you like shitty dubbing) (I kind of do).
