That fall, Player was hired to teach Latin and French at Bennett College, an historically black college in Greensboro, N.C. After studying in France and earning her PhD, she returned to Bennett and worked her way up through various administrative positions, becoming president in 1956. /3

Player invited MLK to speak at Bennett when other colleges and churches were afraid to do so. When the Greensboro Four began sit-ins to protest segregated lunch counters, she supported Bennett students who chose to participate and coordinated their assignments so they wouldn’t fall behind. /4

Player stepped down as president of Bennett in 1966, and was appointed by LBJ as the first female Director of the Division of College Support in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She served there until her retirement in 1986. She passed away on Aug. 29, 2003, at age 94. /end
