Thank you. It’s important to keep in mind that despite the very real and horrific issues faced by humanity today, we have it far better than pretty much every generation prior. It’s our responsibility to adapt and weather this next storm. We can do it.

Baltimore City has a lot of work ahead, however the existence of our stormwater enterprise fund means we at least have a dedicated revenue stream to utilize each year to fund necessary capital projects.

Upgrading our existing infrastructure will be extremely expensive, but we really have no other choice. This will require an all hands on deck approach, involving governments, institutions and the private sector working together.

In the era of climate change we’re seeing these storms occurring multiple times a month now. This is our new norm and at this point there’s no going back. That window closed long ago.

US stormwater infrastructure is generally designed to handle 10 year storms, meaning larger storms that historically occurred maybe a handful of times each decade.

Through May, Baltimore has recorded 54 homicides, the fewest through the first 5 months of a year on record. The previous low: 65 homicides, in 1977.
At this point in 2022, just three years ago, there had been 138 killings, and in 2017 there had been 146 people killed.

We must not be complacent though - this is technically a temporary victory, with HUR allocations to Baltimore City falling off a cliff again after FY27.

I loved surprising people when we were able to make our government work. It is truly one of the best feelings to see people believe in their city again, chipping away at years of apathy. A truly rewarding experience.

I can’t wait to see these improvements build out over he next few years, whether it be roadway resurfacing, traffic calming, sidewalk repairs, signal upgrades, and transformational streetscape projects that will make our public corridors safer for all road users.

Accomplishing this would not have been possible without an amazing team of local and state partners. Big policy wins like this happen when folks are willing to push personal differences aside and work together on behalf of the public.

Looking back at my time in City Gov, my contributions towards the City’s efforts to reverse a more than decade long cut to the our annual HUR formula was probably what I am most proud of. It is not hyperbole to say the impact of this policy work will be felt for generations.

There’s a lot of folks that have contributed to Baltimore’s remarkable reduction in violent crime over the past few years. Our State’s Attorney Ivan Bates is undeniably one of those folks. I’m looking forward to supporting his re-election efforts in 2026.

The Baltimore Greenway is such low hanging fruit. We should be embarrassed this isn't already completed...
