It is now 6:00AM, and "Paxton" comes back in a skirt and longer hair, going by Harmony now. She waves hello to Taunie, who looks a bit flustered. Taunie: Why does this keep happening?

Performance on Switch 1 is buttery, the only frame drops I noticed were at the very end of the game, throughout most of your adventure it's smooth. And graphically, this is the art-style for Pokémon, please Game Freak stick with this look for Gen 10 onwards.

And a lot of characters felt rushed into the plot, a whole bunch of storylines happen and you're just sitting there like "if this was introduced or hinted at earlier in the game, this would feel much more satisfying"

I do enjoy the setting though, and hope more cities like this come to later games

In terms of the story? I think it's single-handedly the worst aspect of the game. The mid-game is introduced in a way that will upset you if you enjoyed the tournament ranking like I did.

Lumiose was fun to explore, my biggest criticism of it is maybe it's a bit too small? I understand this game is a much smaller scale, but once you've hit the mid-game there doesn't really feel like there's a lot left to explore.

So for context, I played the leaked build and have finished the main story. I have since transferred my save to my retail copy.
First thing, wow. The battle system refresh is what Pokémon needed for its games. I love turn-based JRPGs *a lot* but this is the first Pokémon game to feel like the anime.

So now that Z-A is out in all regions, I can give my thoughts. I'll try and keep this as spoiler free as possible, but if you're worried about that, don't read further down this comment chain aaaaaaaaa. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I hate to defend the multi-billion dollar corporation. I really do. But, like understand the subject matter more before you have takes like this.

Having the entire city model in memory stops the game from having to constantly load in model data when you're outside - which if you had to split it up, you would need loading zones per district, as you have to account for the slowest storage speed a console supports (in Switch 1's case Micro SD)

View Frustrum Culling is a very common way of optimising games, and most - if not all open world games I can think of use it in some form.
Having the entire city in memory also prevents the game from having to load constantly.
To have an open world, you need a large model.

Like most modern games, Pokémon ZA uses View Frustrum culling, so while the entire city map is in memory, not all of it is actually being rendered, only what the player can see. The polygons being rendered are the ones that impact performance.
(minus some CPU time)

Someone doesn't know what view frustrum culling is, or really anything about modern game optimisation.
First - I've been playing the leaked rom of Z-A (I have also pre-ordered the game) and it's a very solid 900p@30FPS on Switch 1. Performance wise, it's on par with Zelda.
