I’m at that age where a new washing machine is an exciting purchase.

My birthday present is the new fence to replace the one that Storm Goretti blew over.

You left me an empty chrysalis of what never was. Yet you expect me to continue when my heart stopped with yours. I will purport to live, not with love, but its afterimage, honed into a weapon I can finally wield. #WriteCBC

Look at the types of holiday, and think what youβ€˜d do on them.

I also found jumping onto Waterstones and searching partial words helped me find the full book title when I was really stuck.

Done! But I know they can see all the incorrect answers we collectively put in. They must get such a laugh from those. Let me know if you need clues. They puns are still terrible, but not as bad as the one they did a few years back for The Man Who Died Twice.

My hearing aids won't be ready until January, which means one more Christmas period of failed socialising in large gatherings because I can't hear what's being said.

This has made me more sad than I expected.

Emma, just accept that running is now a migraine trigger and stop kidding yourself that it might have magically switched back to those days in my 20s when I could knock out 10k along the coast path without a problem.

Signed, Me (nursing a post-run eye stabbing migraine).

My heart snaps, and I bind it with tape and ribbon, just like the thoughtless gift now open in my lap.
β€˜It’s wonderful.’
β€˜I knew you’d love it.’ His kiss is warm, rehearsed.
I pretend to study the gift, my fingers trembling.
I found the ring in your coat. Whose finger does it sparkle on?

#Sundaylit A2: Do you use colour based on its symbolic weight? How do you avoid using clichΓ©s when using colour symbolically? e.g. green for envy, red for anger.

I use color incidentally. Meaning some colors show up under certain conditions. It is seldom meant a symbolize. Nor is it clichΓ© […]

#SundayLit A3: Which colours regularly crop up in your storytelling? Why is that?

Blue -> supernatural & hair color
Black -> style
Red-> Hair color
White/Silver/Gray -> fog, clouds
Green -> Growing things

I describe things, and color is part of that. It is part of a baroque writing style.

The wardresses at the Bearfort jail were a cynical and hard-bitten lot, who thought they had seen and heard everything, and they treated Jackie’s cries of distress with initial contempt. Anyone might feign illness, to try and get a softer bed in the infirmary. A quick look through the spyhole, however, had changed their minds quite quickly. Even they had never seen so much vomit come from one person, and never any that was such a virulent shade of green.

The meaning of Blue.

For most horror and horror-adjective fiction, red is the color of fear. Demon eyes blaze red, fire crackles.

The next day, rather late in the morning, Aiella burst into Burroughs’ cottage in a state of high excitement, with Eliana following rather more calmly behind.
β€œI danced, Burroughs!” she cried, so loudly that Tess woke up and let off a bark. β€œSorry, Tess. But I did! I danced at a ball, with everybody, and I wore a lovely dress and shiny shoes and oh, you should have seen me!”
β€œAnd so I did see thee, lass, and a proper picture thou looked, too.”
β€œWhat? How did you see me?”
β€œYon miss there,” nodding to Eliana, who stood smiling in the doorway β€œsorted it for me. I was sat up in the gallery, and her maid brought me summat to eat and a drop of beer, and I saw it all. Eh, but thou called to mind thy grandmother. A bonny lass she was, and very great at the dancing.”
Aiella whirled round to face Eliana, who was laughing now. β€œDid you do that? Did you sneak Burroughs in just so he could see me?”
β€œYes, I did, and he had a fine old time up there, I hear, cracking stories with the musicians, and drinking about five pints of beer.”
Aiella flung her arms about her, and squeezed her tight. β€œOh, that was such a kind thing!” she cried. β€œOh, Ellie, I do love you!”
And if Burroughs noticed a strange, pained expression cross Eliana’s face as she heard this he never told anybody about it.

And here came Cole now, carrying a basket and a book, accompanied by his warm smile and a large dog at his heels.

[cut text not relevant to happiness theme]

β€œHello, Maximilian,” Leo crooned, rubbing the dog behind the ears. β€œGood afternoon, Mr Fluffy Face.”

Cole set down his encumbrances and spread wide his arms. β€œWounded to the quick,” he announced. β€œAn iota of the same enthusiasm, please.”

Leo obligingly said, β€œGood afternoon, Mr Fluffy Face,” and congratulated himself on exactly matching it to the way he spoken to Max.

β€œBetter,” Cole said, though Leo noted with amusement that he rubbed his fingers across his impeccably-groomed short beard as he took his seat.
