Listening to @pjminterconnection.bsky.social stakeholders (mostly gas owners, natch) argue that we should pretend the TWO times gas failures nearly caused blackouts didn't happen is making my stomach hurt.

@pjminterconnection.bsky.social stakeholders just rejected PJM's proposed reserve margin for 2027/28. I think that's the first time that's ever happened.

PJM keeps raising their reserve target because of extreme winter weather, and seems like people are skeptical that's worth the bill.

From PJM today: cancelling "the large majority" of offshore wind will push PJM below reliability standards by 2030.

So one immediate change with Christie taking the #FERC chair is that the official page numbers in orders now match the pdf page numbers. #progress!

Does the author of the bill think resource adequacy is simply adding up the nameplate of every resource?

Section 3(c) says value fossil (excuse me, "baseload") resources based on "expected deliverable energy;" Seems like a competent utility planner or PSC would simply read this as "ELCC for all"

No doubt it's motivated by malice. Still is it best to br'er rabbit this? Act like it's horrible and pretend to fight--better to direct their malice in pointless directions before they find something that actually matters to break, no? (3/3)

I kind of like the idea of anti-renewable people triumphantly marching in, holding the bill up high, declaring "Ha Liberals! Now you have to plan for the sun going down at night!" and everyone awkwardly looking at each other like "Huh? We've been doing that for 30 years" (2/3)

Looking through this, the "don't count DR part" is the only thing obviously offensive. It's pretty funny, there's a category of criticisms of renewables that boil down to "only I know the sun goes down at night." It looks like the authors of this legislation really believed that. (1/3)

There's a disturbing background thread going on of right-wingers hunting for "bias" in AIs. I'm putting FTC going after companies whose AIs don't respond with MAGA talking points on my 2025 bingo card.

Great data from @renewableenergy.bsky.social.

If this is 4-hour storage, adding just the amount California installed in one year to @pjminterconnection.bsky.social would save around $10 billion/year for at least one and probably three years. And PJM is 3.5x CAISO's size.

The state of California has the second most battery energy storage; only China has more.

California has increased 1,340% in the past 6 years to 13,391 MW today.

The speed of development is stunning:

- 5 years to reach 10,000 MW (early 2024)
- just 6 months to add the most recent 3,000 MW.

Does anyone know who first said "reliability is the last refuge of scoundrels"? I know it's with apologies to Samuel Johnson, wondering if there's a record of who first used it re electricity ratemaking.

From today's NYT: "The F.C.C.’s chairman, Brendan Carr, had requested a transcript of the interview after a news distortion complaint was lodged with that agency..."

News distortion complaints are a thing? What the hell have the dems been doing for the last 16+ years?

@pjminterconnection.bsky.social has about 30GW of import capacity, but the only imports in the last auction were 1.2GW under legacy contracts from 2016 or earlier. PJM's import rules seem to create barriers to reliability.
