The old saying "It's darkest just before the dawn" is incorrect. From my experience, "It's always darkest just before it's pitch black."
01.12.2025 18:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A new day begins. Brace yourselves, good people.

A long drive south of Ashland, but I had relatives near the Hocking Hills in Ohio. Had time in the Cumberland Plateau area (supposedly, I was born there, but I doubt it), and then over well past Jenkins into West Virginia. Moved around a bit, always landing near relatives, even in Tennessee hollers.
30.11.2025 20:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, it was.
30.11.2025 19:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cinders.
30.11.2025 18:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Around those parts, coal was the usual, although there might also be a wood stove. There were a few oil burners, but those were more toward town. Coal was okay, but I did sorely dislike pulling the clinkers.
30.11.2025 18:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes.
30.11.2025 17:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I spent years in the Cumberland Gap area, and I headed north through eastern Ohio (never missing a detour toward Akron for Swensen's cheeseburgers) to get to Pennsylvania to visit relatives who were breakaways from the more religious communities; then I'd head down and around to Toledo.
30.11.2025 15:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well, I'll be darned. You know these places. They're so familiar to me that I might be able to do these paintings with my eyes shut.
30.11.2025 14:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Another day begins. Let's survive it.

Not deserted. This was what communities looked like in the times of my kin. I was in places like this. The more "modern" versions in the backlands have old house trailers side-by-side with shacks and a few better houses. Even though I'm okay with being there, the stories they tell... never mind
28.11.2025 21:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Forgive me for that slice-of-life (such that is and always has been). If it's of any reassurance, although my artwork sometimes carries a greater or lesser degree of Realism movement influence, I'm not inclined to take my viewers into the Appalachian life quite as far as the inside of an outhouse.
28.11.2025 19:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The most frightening part in that weather was going to the outhouse. Some of the houses shared one (a "two holer").

Welcome to Bluesky. You will like this out-of-the-way diner much more than Twitter. Follow me here and I'll follow you back.
28.11.2025 00:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Well, thank you, and the same right back to you. I have the turkey prepped and in the oven. I made the pumpkin pie last night, and the mashed potatoes will be whipped after the turkey comes out and sets for a while. Squash is in the oven, too. My daughter is making her broccoli-cheese casserole.
27.11.2025 16:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I sincerely appreciate your kind words.
27.11.2025 13:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Happy morning to all of you.

27.11.2025 12:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's my style, a transition from the outer world to the world I see.
27.11.2025 12:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is one of my versions of Hopper's "Nighthawks," except that I wanted more of a sense of the loneliness of Eternity rather than just the alienation of modernity. That, and Mabel's is the respite of life before the loneliness of forever.
