Well, hey there, all you morning people. Let's get this day started.

The old saying "It's darkest just before the dawn" is incorrect. From my experience, "It's always darkest just before it's pitch black."

A long drive south of Ashland, but I had relatives near the Hocking Hills in Ohio. Had time in the Cumberland Plateau area (supposedly, I was born there, but I doubt it), and then over well past Jenkins into West Virginia. Moved around a bit, always landing near relatives, even in Tennessee hollers.

Around those parts, coal was the usual, although there might also be a wood stove. There were a few oil burners, but those were more toward town. Coal was okay, but I did sorely dislike pulling the clinkers.

I spent years in the Cumberland Gap area, and I headed north through eastern Ohio (never missing a detour toward Akron for Swensen's cheeseburgers) to get to Pennsylvania to visit relatives who were breakaways from the more religious communities; then I'd head down and around to Toledo.

Well, I'll be darned. You know these places. They're so familiar to me that I might be able to do these paintings with my eyes shut.

Not deserted. This was what communities looked like in the times of my kin. I was in places like this. The more "modern" versions in the backlands have old house trailers side-by-side with shacks and a few better houses. Even though I'm okay with being there, the stories they tell... never mind

Forgive me for that slice-of-life (such that is and always has been). If it's of any reassurance, although my artwork sometimes carries a greater or lesser degree of Realism movement influence, I'm not inclined to take my viewers into the Appalachian life quite as far as the inside of an outhouse.

The most frightening part in that weather was going to the outhouse. Some of the houses shared one (a "two holer").

Well, thank you, and the same right back to you. I have the turkey prepped and in the oven. I made the pumpkin pie last night, and the mashed potatoes will be whipped after the turkey comes out and sets for a while. Squash is in the oven, too. My daughter is making her broccoli-cheese casserole.

This is one of my versions of Hopper's "Nighthawks," except that I wanted more of a sense of the loneliness of Eternity rather than just the alienation of modernity. That, and Mabel's is the respite of life before the loneliness of forever.
