A thread about this name dispute: in medieval times, bodies of water were often named for where they led, hence the common use of names invoking Persia because of Siraf and other Persian ports. A Persian source, meanwhile, called it the Gulf of Iraq, while "Gulf of Basra" was common in 1600's (1)

White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Been trying to work out why this headline annoyed me so much and I think it’s the implication that the rise of fascism in the west was somehow someone else’s fault or someone else’s responsibility.

No surprise to those of us who are actually paying attention.

It’s official: In the USA The Gulf of Mexico is now the “Gulf of America,” and Denali, the Alaska Native name for North America’s tallest peak, has been reverted to Mount McKinley. But we refuse to accept this change—Denali will always be Denali to us. #IStandWithDenali

Everyone was warned about this, and it’s happening just as we feared.

This is not just undermining accountability for past crimes. It's a green light for violence if that violence serves the President's will. A truly dangerous moment in America. We have crossed the rubicon.

This is genuinely disturbing. Removal of security for people known to be assassination targets in order to punish them for their political opposition. It is not a threat of violence, but it amounts to a threat to allow violence against political opponents.

The ROI on research and education is *amazing* but Republicans are bad at busines.

Trump White House suspends all civil rights enforcement. Remember this applies to race, sex discrimination, disabilities etc

Starting to hear news of human rights NGOs from a bit everywhere losing much if not all of their fundings due to the Trump cuts. I can’t legally share yet but I suspect the news will come out soon if it hasn’t already. This includes groups that investigate crimes against humanity
