..until finally, our crew got visual and spotted the meanwhile unseaworthy boat! They launched RHIB Molly, distributed life jackets and embarked all the 31 people to Sea Punk I. They told our crew that they were at sea for four days. Ten of those rescued were unaccompanied minors.

Towards the late night we could not find them despite a firm lookout. But then, around 3 a.m. the people in distress boat called back Alarm Phone. With new information on our hands, we changed again the course and resumed the search, ...

Sea Punk I changed speed and course to head towards their last known position and our crew started the search. Then night fell, and the rubber boat stopped communicating with Alarm Phone. We attempted to contact them by searchlight and sound signals, but with no feedback.

Yesterday afternoon, our crew got notice from @alarmphoneofficial about a rubber boat in distress with circa 30 people on board. At that time, the boat was in Tunisian waters and was having difficulty steering.

Sea Punk rescued 31 people from distress after four days at sea!

Sie ließen RHIB Molly zu Wasser, verteilten Rettungswesten und brachten alle 31 Personen an Bord der Sea Punk I. Diese berichteten unserer Crew, dass sie bereits vier Tage auf See gewesen waren. Zehn der Überlebenden waren unbegleitete Minderjährige. Lampedusa wurde uns als sicherer Hafen zugewiesen

Doch dann, gegen 3 Uhr morgens, meldete sich das in Seenot geratene Boot wieder bei Alarm Phone. Mit den neuen Informationen änderten wir erneut den Kurs und setzten die Suche fort, bis unsere Crew das mittlerweile seeuntüchtige Boot schließlich sichtete!

Dann brach die Nacht herein, und das Schlauchboot kontaktierte Alarm Phone nicht mehr. Wir versuchten, sie mit Suchscheinwerfern und Schallsignalen zu erreichen, erhielten aber keine Antwort. Im Verlauf der Nacht konnten wir sie trotz intensiver Suche nicht finden.

Das Boot befand sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt in tunesischen Gewässern und hatte Schwierigkeiten beim Steuern. Die Sea Punk I änderte Geschwindigkeit und Kurs, um die letzte bekannte Position des Boots in Seenot anzusteuern, und unsere Crew begann die Suche.

(English below) Sea Punk rettet 31 Menschen nach vier Tagen auf dem Mittelmeer! Gestern Nachmittag erhielt unsere Crew von @alarmphoneofficial die Meldung über ein in Seenot geratenes Schlauchboot mit etwa 30 Personen an Bord.

Rescues are not uncommon at night, and visibility is especially poor in the darkness. A small light on the horizon could be a smartphone held aloft in search of help and rescue for people in distress at sea. Or simply the spotlight of a very distant tanker.

When night falls, it means our crew aboard the Sea Punk I continues their work: keeping watch. The crew splits up and takes shifts on the night watch on deck, so everyone can rest and sleep. But a few of them always have to be on deck, keeping a close eye on the surroundings.

Ein kleines Licht am Horizont könnte ein Smartphone sein, das auf der Suche nach Hilfe und Rettung von Menschen in Seenot in die Luft gehalten wird. Oder einfach nur ein Schweinwerfer von einem sehr weit entfernten Tanker.

Aber ein paar müssen immer an Deck stehen und beobachten die Umgebung genau. Nicht selten kommt es zu Rettungen in der Nacht, wobei besonders in der Dunkelheit kaum etwas zu erkennen ist.

Given its vastness, small boats in distress are extremely difficult to spot. And their hopes were confirmed in the evening when it was announced that all 75 people from the inflatable boat had been rescued by the Coast Guard in time and taken to Lampedusa. Our crew goes on with no break. On board the ship, they take up their positions and carefully observe the sea.

In this case, however, our crew had already received information from the crew of the Oyvon from @doctorswithoutborders that an Italian Coast Guard vessel had been sighted shortly before in the same location with people on board.

It's a sight that civilian sea rescue organizations often encounter, and one that sends a chill down your spine: because you don't know what happened to the people on that inflatable boat, but you have to assume the worst.

An empty inflatable boat sinking – that was all our crew could see yesterday when they arrived at the coordinates where, hours earlier, a distress call involving 75 people had been reported.

Überall auf dem Schiff bringen sie sich in Position und beobachten das Meer ganz genau. Bei der Weite und der Größe, lassen sich kleine Boote in Seenot nur sehr schwer erkennen. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass die Crew im Ausguck ist und Wache steht.

Und die Hoffnung bestätigte sich am Abend, als bekannt wurde, dass alle 75 Menschen von diesem Schlauchboot rechtzeitig von der Küstenwache an Bord geholt und nach Lampedusa gebracht wurden. Für unsere Crew geht es ohne Pause weiter.

In diesem Fall hatte unsere Crew aber durch die Besatzung der Oyvon von @aerzteohnegrenzen bereits die Info erhalten, dass ein Boot der italienischen Küstenwache kurz zuvor am gleichen Ort mit Menschen an Bord gesichtet wurde.
