Algorithmic Field is a tool for generating aleatoric constraints for plein air paintings in New York City. The project reflects on the ways in which algorithmic logic and quantified thinking shape our interaction with and perception of reality, as well as the aesthetic and expressive qualities of painting itself. The tool can generate a near-limitless number of possible combinations of constraints.

@klayjamesenos.bsky.social and I have a series -- his paintings, my code -- in "about, not by; for, not from," a virtual exhibition by Unrequited Leisure, featuring work where "artists probe the cultural gravity of algorithms without surrendering authorship to them."

take that opens with a title card reminiscent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and is something like if BelΓ‘ Tarr directed a slasher film; and The Flesh and the Fiends (1960) a B&W mashup of Hammer's Dracula and Frankenstein with real life historical murders that's better than it has a right to be.

Still from Shahram Mokri's Fish & Cat

Every October, I watch a horror movie I've never seen each day. Pleasant surprises this year included Shanks (1974), William Castle's last film about a puppeteer played by legendary mime Marcel Marceau who learns he can reanimate the dead; Fish & Cat (2013), an Iranian feature shot in a single (1/2)

Each scene in Barbara Greg's wood engravings becomes a little world, a contained environment, and so it is with 'The Grass Snake Taking the Last of the Summer's Warmth.' (1950) Whatever the scene shows, there is no elsewhere, no alternative - a complete world.
