Sitting in my local spoons, thinking about an ambitious side coding project I want to try. Make an iceberg float and classification GUI on python.

I think I'm almost ready to submit my paper again. This has been ongoing since last December. Hundreds of hours.

On a serious note: peer review quality on iceberg detection papers is a problem: too many traditional ML experts who think more images, not labels, are the answer, and call our work bad science.

I'm caught in their wrath as I try to get this paper published.

Peer review process for iceberg science: "You're training an AI for your pipeline? You gotta get more images!"

The data scarce field of iceberg detection: "Hahaha sure you want me to get 200 images, 95% of which will be useless"

Hi I'm Sonny and I got my PhD in 2022.

I'm also autistic and been diagnosed since 1998.

My special interests are ice, snow, weather, planes, trains and travel.

I turned one of those special interests into a living.

How?

I study icebergs.

Academia is cool because if you're doing it right, every paper you published in the last 3 years feels inadequate now that you understand the topic better, but it'll take 3 years to get out the version where you get it more right, and you get to do that until one day you die! Isn't that cool

Doing a linkedin course on plain writing, and some of these tips are completely different to scientific writing. I've always been told I write like a scientist, even outside of science.

I've been told constantly that I overshare and that I shouldn't. Even by people who are autistic (but a lot older than me).

I mostly overshare because if I miss important details, I will think I haven't given the full information.

As an autistic adult, I like to tidy my own spaces and ensure only I move things around so I can remember where it all is. If someone moves things when I'm out of sight, it could make things more difficult.

Still makes me laugh that Kinder Surprise eggs are banned in the US.

Today's a very good day. I wrote my first ever research grant proposal last month. Today I was told I'm being awarded the grant. Happy days. 😄

Earwax build up is so bad for me. I am wondering if its just my stress levels. I'm autistic, so my chronic stress levels are quite high compared to the NT population.

Starting to notice videos freezing after trying to watch them in my Facebook news feed and it's really inconvenient and annoying.

Outside of work I'm struggling to make new friends as I don't have much of a support network here.

There's something annoying to me about media articles that have to be written to hide blatantly obvious messaging.

What's stopping you from saying the quiet parts out loud?

I'm very good at spotting patterns and hidden messaging.

It's a red flag if "everyone is welcome" is controversial to you.

As I write a giant application and another paper, I can't help but continue to have the utmost empathy for my friends in the US.

It's an empathy that makes me physically shake and my heart beat rapidly increase.

This is autistic hyper empathy at its strongest.

Was hoping to fly SWA domestic to Phoenix later this year, after an international layover. I may look at other options from here in the UK.

I certainly feel as if I wasn't able to do a lot of what I wanted to do in my teens but I'm 30 now and taking up opportunities to travel and immerse myself in different ways.
