Roman relief of a shop scene: two shop assistants, observed by a supervisor, pull a fine fabric out of a container and show it to a couple seated on a bench to the right of the panel. Above them, cushions and fabrics hang from a pole set beneath the tiled roof of the shop.
#ReliefWednesday - In this relief, a decorative element from the funerary monument of an unknown cloth merchant, we see a Roman matron being shown a sample of fabric: ca. Mid 1st century AD. #Roman #Art ๐บ

Most of the image is of a white mosaic and the top part is small pumice stones
That magical moment when the pumice is gently cleared away revealing, for the first time in nearly 2000 years, a white mosaic.

28.09.2025 09:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Today, the site of Tres Tabernae is an important archaeological area. Excavations have brought to light significant findings, which offer insights into the ancient settlement. Efforts are underway to further explore and preserve this historical site (currently not open to visitors).
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The prosperity of Tres Tabernae waned as it was attacked and eventually razed to the ground by barbarians and later by Saracens in 868 CE. The inhabitants sought safety elsewhere, leading to the foundation of the nearby community of Cisterna.
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The settlement became an episcopal see (seat of a bishop) in the early Christian era, but this function was later merged with the diocese of Velletri around the 9th century due to a decline in population. In the photos are the remains of the early Christian church unearthed here in 2024.
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0According to the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament, St. Paul was met by a group of Roman Christians at Tres Tabernae during his journey to Rome, an event that gave him courage and is often cited as a key moment in the early Christian history of the region.
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Tres Tabernae is mentioned in historical and religious texts highlighting its importance. The Roman orator Cicero stayed there and referenced the location in letters he wrote to his friend Atticus in the years 61 and 59 BCE. Tres Tabernae is also present on the Tabula Peutingeriana.
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Tres Tabernae originated as a "mansio" or "mutatio"โa post station and rest stop for travellers on the Via Appia. Its name likely derives from the three taverns or shops that served travellers at this crossroads. The thermal complex in the pictures was part of the mansio.
28.09.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0#AncientSiteSunday A glorious day in Tres Tabernae! Tres Tabernae (meaning "Three Taverns") was a significant ancient Roman settlement located on the Via Appia, approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of Rome. A thread ๐งต #archaeology #history

27.09.2025 08:41 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My photo shows the ruin of an eight-sided Roman brick lighthouse with four stepped levels. There is a doorway at ground level, above which, on the upper three levels, are narrow rectangular window openings. It stands 15.8 metres high and is 12.2 metres wide at the base. Roman fabric survives to a height of 12.5 m. The brickwork of the uppermost level was reconstructed for use as a church bell tower for the adjacent Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary in Castro of which a small portion can be seen in my photo on the right hand side. The Pharos is dated 1st century - early 2nd century AD and is one of a pair originally built on the headland flanking each side of the Roman port of Dubris (Dover). It now stands within the grounds of Dover Castle.
The amazing Roman pharos (lighthouse) at Dover, still standing after almost 2,000 years! ๐คฉ
The tallest surviving Roman structure in Britain, and one of only three surviving lighthouses from the former Roman Empire! Dated 1st-2nd century AD.
