I recently read Solnit’s Orwell’s Roses (rather, listened on library audiobook) which is entirely about this juxtaposition in his writing. It was wonderful.

I was driving dad to the office yesterday and we went past twin lakes. It was his first time out since we got him home from the hospital (he's doing better). He turns to me and says, "Did we just by a dick? Was that a giant dick?"

I wasn't sure what to make of it but apparently, yes.

Love that our news-monitoring anxiety options are:

a) take little sips of poison all day long, try to shake it off between doses

b) wait to chug a gallon of the stuff until end of day or in the morning

c) ignore it entirely and be surprised when Trump-branded tanks roll down your street oh no

It all started when we went to my parents' house yesterday for Christmas dinner, and my mom pulled out this handwritten recipe for Shape Cookies:

That is the best edition, in my opinion! I love the woodcut internal illustrations, which unfortunately didn’t make it into later versions.

They’re also slim volumes, which fits well with Le Guin’s spare prose. Every page matters.

The literally knee-weakening relief of finding 5 obscure novels from the 1790s on Internet Archive, when my other options were a) pay the currently-wildly-overworked BL research services team for scan & send, b) pay £250 for POD versions via AbeBooks, or c) invent the rest of this thesis chapter.

First bloom of the season in our little succulent garden! I've been transplanting as many different varieties as I can. This one was from Thornton Beach.

It's been a radiantly beautiful few days in the Bay Area.
